Forden will assume duties as Economic Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv in August 2011. He most recently served as Deputy Economic Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, China. Prior to his position in Beijing, Mr. Forden served as Deputy Director and Political Chief of the Office of Chinese and Mongolian Affairs at the U.S. Department of State from 2005 to 2007. Prior to that he was Principal Officer at the Kaohsiung Branch Office of the American Institute in Taiwan from 2002 to 2005. His previous tours abroad include Hanoi, Vietnam from 1999 to 2002; Beijing, China from 1995 to 1998; and Taipei, Taiwan from 1989 to 1991. At the U.S. Department of State he served as Trade Officer in the Economic Bureau from 1991 to 1993 and Representative to NAFTA and GATT Uruguay Round Tariff negotiations and NAFTA Government Procurement negotiations. He also served as Staff Assistant in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for East Asia and the Pacific. Mr. Forden joined the Foreign Service in 1989. He has been awarded the U.S. Department of State's individual Superior Honor Award three times and Meritorious Honor Award twice. Mr. Forden holds a Bachelor of Arts in Politics from the University of California and did postgraduate work in International Trade and Asian Diplomatic History at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy. He is proficient in Mandarin Chinese and Vietnamese.
