16,000 expected at KFC Yum! Center USO concert attended by Jill Biden

About 16,000 free tickets have been distributed to a USO-sponsored concert scheduled Tuesday night at the KFC YUM! Center to honor America’s service personnel, their families and those who support them.

The concert will be headlined by country music’s Montgomery Gentry and will be attended by Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden. She will open the program at 7 p.m. with welcoming remarks, said Lt. Col. Kirk Hilbrecht, director of public affairs for the Kentucky National Guard, which helped organize the concert.

The concert will be broadcast live via the www.Pentagonchannel.com website. The concert is being held in conjunction with the National Guard’s 2011 National Volunteers’ Workshop and Youth Symposium. About 1,400 participants are attending the workshop, which runs Sunday through Wednesday this week in Louisville.

The Tuesday night show is being promoted as the first-ever “USO Homefront Concert.” And officials say it marks the first USO concert created especially for military families.

Hilbrecht said Kentucky Guard officials recently approached USO officials at their headquarters in Washington D.C., about having a special event in Louisville to honor active-duty and reserve military personnel and their families.

He said all the tickets to the concert have been distributed through Fort Knox, Fort Campbell, Kentucky Veterans of Foreign Wars posts and other outlets and organizations that cater to the military. No tickets are available to the general public.

The tickets have gone on a first-come, first-served basis to Guardsmen, reservists, active duty personnel, veterans, military retirees and their families.

Maj. Gen. Edward Tonini, adjutant general for the Kentucky National Guard, said the concert will have an impact far beyond Kentucky. The anticipated audience is to include 378 bases worldwide, with the Pentagon to uplink the concert to the Armed Forces Network for distribution worldwide and to ships at sea.

“This event is for every man and woman around the world wearing a United States military uniform, and especially for their families,” Tonini said.
