On Saturday, I toured four New Jersey senior centers -- again and again I heard the same question: "Who will protect Social Security?"

Sadly: not my opponent, Jeff Bell.

Bell has called for corporate tax breaks which would threaten Social Security benefits for future retirees, and said that Social Security should be "modestly downsized".

As I heard from seniors across my state: that's not the values of the New Jersey -- or the America -- we know. And we need to stand up now to defend them.

Will you stand with me to protect Social Security from Jeff Bell and his Tea Party allies? Sign my petition and add your name to the chorus of voices asking to be counted as a defender of Social Security.

Social Security has long been under attack in Washington, D.C. by Tea Party groups and right-wing think tanks.

Here's why I could never agree: One in five New Jerseyans receive Social Security benefits, with a monthly stipend of $1,279 used to pay for food, rent, and other basic necessities. Were it not for Social Security, almost thirty percent of our state's senior population would have an income lower than the poverty line.

The solemn need of so many neighbors, friends and family members is why it's so important we stand up and fight.

Stand with me and sign my petition to defend Social Security. I need to know I can count on you when I return to Washington, D.C. after this election.

The hardships Americans have faced since the Great Recession make it urgent that we defend a program which, as FDR said, gives "some measure of protection to the average citizen and to his family against the loss of a job and against poverty-ridden old age."

I believe we're a better country because of President Roosevelt's vision -- I hope that you agree.
