UK export index launched
A new measure of the UK’s exporting health, the quarterly DHL/BCC Trade Confidence Index, is launched. The British Chambers of Commerce says the index draws on a survey of more than 1,000 exporters and an analysis of trade documentation.

US Congress takes break
Both houses of the US Congress are due to begin their
summer recess, subject to the progress of business, returning on September 6.

Badminton’s world stage
The Badminton World Championships begin at London’s Wembley Arena (until August 14), where the Olympic badminton tournament will also be staged in a year’s time.

Census day in Australia
Australia stages its 2011 census, which also marks the 100th anniversary of census taking in the country.

Social movements gather
The European Network Academy for Social Movements in Freiburg, Germany, assembles political activists to discuss
direct democracy, trade, markets and finance (until August 14).

Energy renewed in India
The three-day Renewable Energy India Expo opens in New Delhi, featuring a trade show, conference and business meetings. It will focus in particular on initiatives and finance models to boost research collaboration and technology transfers to India in the field of renewable energy.

Asia analyses food security
The International Conference on Asian Food Security in Singapore brings together public and private sector experts to analyse and discuss the four
basic dimensions of food security: availability, physical access, economic access and utilisation.

Cricket battle resumes
The third Test between England and India begins at Edgbaston, Birmingham (until August 14). England lead 2-0 in the four-match series; a further victory would ensure the team takes the world number one Test ranking.

Lucerne festival strikes up
The Lucerne Festival opens in the Swiss city, featuring an array of orchestras and soloists (to September 18). These include the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonics, the Chicago Symphony, the Israel Philharmonic
and the Dutch Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Republicans at hustings
A Republican presidential primary debate is due to be held at Iowa State University and will be broadcast on Fox News.

UK weighs cheques’ future
The House of Commons Treasury committee publishes a report on the future of cheques. It follows a reversal of a plan by the UK Payments Council, the financial body, to phase cheques out by 2018.

Golf’s PGA major begins
The PGA Championship, golf’s fourth and final “major” tournament of the year, tees off at the Atlanta Athletic Club, Georgia (until August 14).

Bank lending to businesses
A report on the amount of lending to businesses, and to small and medium-sized ones in particular, by leading UK banks during the second quarter is to be released by the Bank of England. The release is part of the Project Merlin agreement between the banks and the government, under which the banks agreed to lend £190bn of new credit to businesses in 2011, with £76bn of this allocated to SMEs.

UK newspaper circulation
Sales figures for July are released by the Audit Bureau of Circulations, showing the impact of the closure of the News Of The World on rival Sunday titles. News International closed the newspaper in response to the phone hacking scandal.

Edinburgh festival
The Edinburgh International Festival opens, bringing opera, music, theatre, dance and visual arts to the Scottish capital. The festival features Asian cultures in particular, with artists from China, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam performing (until September 4).

Glorious Twelfth triggered
The four-month UK grouse shooting season opens on the day known as the “Glorious Twelfth”.

Iowa straw poll staged
The Iowa Republican party Ames straw poll, seen as an important test of the presidential primary candidates’ popularity, takes place.

Bookish topics celebrated
Edinburgh International Book Festival presents a range of international authors and thinkers discussing their work and the changing face of the publishing industry (until August 29).

Castro reaches 85
Fidel Castro, the former Cuban president, celebrates his 85th birthday.

Premier soccer kicks off
The English Premier League season begins. Manchester United, defending champions, play their first match on Sunday at West Bromwich Albion.

Springboks face Wallabies
South Africa host Australia in Durban in the southern hemisphere Tri-Nations rugby union tournament.

Asian tax deal in force
An agreement between Japan and Hong Kong regarding the avoidance of double taxation and prevention of income tax evasion comes into force.

Oil and gas meeting
The Oil and Gas Conference is staged in Denver, Colorado (until August 18), uniting industry executives and experts with institutional and other investors.

Yachts line up for Fastnet
The Fastnet Race, in which more than 300 boats compete over 608 nautical miles, begins off Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The biennial race rounds the Fastnet Rock off the south-west coast of Ireland and then finishes at Plymouth after passing south of the Isles of Scilly.
