A Celebration of Service: Thanking Our Volunteers Who've Made a Difference

Our volunteer force has grown to over 8,000 -- and that's certainly something to celebrate. But on October 23, we celebrated 11 "superstar" volunteers and groups at the Annual Caritas Volunteer Recognition Event.

Held at the PEPCO Gallery and over 150 in attendance, staff and volunteers joined to celebrate the act of service the individuals that make a difference within our programs.

[image: Dental Clinic - Sept Newsletter] Catching Cancer Early in the Mammovan

During the month of October, we recognize breast cancer awareness. Our two medical clinics did their part to ensure women had access to preventative breast cancer screenings, regardless of their income.
¡Celebremos la Vida! (CLV) , a program for low-income immigrant women, provides breast cancer awareness education and screenings. This past month, CLV partnered with the Prevent Cancer Foundation <https://www.catholiccharitiesdc.org/page.redir?target=http%3a%2f%2fwww.preventcancer.org%2f&srcid=15141&srctid=1&erid=758659&trid=4887b6c5-1a9e-4abe-a27e-9d46b958f031> to offer free mammograms by the Mammovan, a mammography unit on wheels!

The Mammovan stopped by both the McCarrick Medical Clinic and the DC Medical Clinic, screening 22 women during each visit.

Hilton Employees Come Out in Force to Give Men's Shelter Some Sparkle

On October 19 as a part of Hilton Worldwide's Global Week of Service, over 120 Hilton employees along with CEO Chris Nassetta, volunteered at our 801 East Men's Shelter to freshen up the living space for the residents of the Youth Transitional Program <https://www.catholiccharitiesdc.org/YTP?srctid=1&erid=758659&trid=4887b6c5-1a9e-4abe-a27e-9d46b958f031> (YTP), a transitional housing program for homeless men between ages 18-24 designed to help them get back on track.
Volunteers built new furniture for the rec room, painted and even assembled desks and computers for a new computer lab. They even had the opportunity to interact directly with the YTP residents in one-on-one conversational exercises.
Hilton's involvement at 801 East - along with the furniture, equipment and food donations is greatly appreciated by all, and especially the YTP residents!

Because You Care

Our McCarrick Family Center, which last year served nearly 10,000 families and individuals, recently assisted a young homeless woman who had left an abusive relationship and was living out of her car. Her case worker assisted her in finding a job and securing a room to rent.
To commemorate September as Hunger Awareness Month many organizations in southern Maryland held community food drives for the Southern Maryland Food Bank , including: White Plains Golf Course, Andrews Air Force Base, Patuxent River Naval Base, Christ Church of Accokeek and Our Lady Help of Christians. The Immigration Legal Services team co-hosted the Annual African Women’s Empowerment Workshop with Montgomery County’s Abused Person’s Program. The workshop brings together women who came here under asylum and are victims of domestic violence, helping pool resources and find strength in each other.
