Primary elections held statewide in Mississippi on Tuesday have kicked off the main leg of the race between incumbent Attorney General Jim Hood (D) and his Republican challenger Steve Simpson (R). Links: 10. mailto:stefan@democraticags.org Both General Hood and former Public Safety Commissioner Simpson went unchallenged in their primary contests on August 2nd 2011. The candidates had been gearing up for this race for the past few weeks indicating that the general election season will produce some interesting discussion and, most likely, a hard fought battle. General Hood and Commissioner Simpson both appeared last week at the recent Neshoba County Fair, a popular Mississippi political event during every election cycle. While Simpson indulged in a little political mud-slinging General Hood focused his stump speech on his record of service and his efforts to revolutionize the fight against cyber crime. General Hood has consistently led Simpson in public polling but DAGA is ready for the inevitable deluge of third party money in this critical race. Tuesday’s primary did lead to a dramatic conclusion for the Democratic candidates for Governor. Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree (D) and Clarksdale lawyer Bill Luckett (D) will face off in an August 23rd run-off election. Luckett and DuPree finished within 4 percentage points and neither candidate received more than 50% of the vote. The winner of the run-off will face Lt. Governor Phil Bryant (R) won the Republican primary on Tuesday. Outgoing (term-limited) Governor Haley Barbour (R) handpicked Bryant as his GOP successor.
