Details below. Now that you have met all of this year's distinguished honorees, please meet one of America's finest dance companies appearing on our gala performance. Houston Ballet will perform the Act II Pas de Deux from Giselle. Founded in 1955, Houston Ballet is one of the jewels in the crown of America's greatest national dance companies. Former Royal Ballet dancer Ben Stevenson served as artistic director from 1976-2003, establishing a core of permanent choreographers whose works have greatly enriched the company's repertory. In 2003, Australian dancer and choreographer Stanton Welch assumed the leadership, and has choreographed thirteen works for the company. Under the administrative leadership of managing director Cecil C. Conner since 1995 (C.C. also serves on the board of Career Transition For Dancers), Houston Ballet has taken the lead in arranging collaborations with other major American ballet companies to nurture the creation of new major productions. Over the last ten years, the company has performed in London, New York, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Toronto, MontrÉal, The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. We are pleased and proud to have artists from Houston Ballet performing at our 26th Anniversary Jubilee. - http://cts.vresp.com/c/?CareerTransitionForD/ad54fda8f2/1f5d2278c5/512910d083/noFBG=1&utm_content=hbiden%40senecaga.com&utm_source=VerticalResponse&utm_medium=Email&utm_term=Text%20Version%20-%20Link%204&utm_campaign=Deadline%20extended%21%20Learn%20about%20Houston%20Ballet%20and%20Giselle See Houston Ballet perform at The Joyce Theater October 11-16! Take this opportunity to see this amazing company perform works by Jorma Elo, Christopher Bruce and Jiri Kylian. Don't miss this chance to see "one of the nation's best ballet companies." - The New York Times. LOVE. PASSION. BETRAYAL. DEATH. FORGIVENESS: Act II Pas de Deux from Giselle. First performed at the Paris Opera in 1841, Giselle is considered the finest of the Romantic ballets. It was inspired by a passage in Heine's "De l'Allemagne" describing the legend of betrothed girls who died before their wedding day and return as Wilis (spirits of the dead) to dance in the misty moonlight. In the first act of this ballet, Giselle, a country girl, dies of a broken heart after discovering that her lover, Albrecht, a nobleman, has deceived her. In the second act, Giselle rises from the grave as a Wili and dances with her beloved Albrecht to save his life. As the dawn breaks, Giselle forgives Albrecht and she returns to her grave. Albrecht's life is spared. This ballet makes the utmost demands on the dramatic and technical abilities of a ballerina. For over 170 years, the world's supreme ballerinas have danced this role, including the legendary Romantic ballerinas of the mid 1800's: Grahn, Cerrito and Elssler. Other world renowned ballerinas who have performed Giselle include: Pavlova, Karsavina, Spessivtseva, Ulanova, Fonteyn, Markova, Fracci, Kirkland, Makarova, Vishneva and Ferri.
