Yesterday, I announced a broad proposal to introduce the critical first steps of taking necessary law enforcement measures to regain some control of our streets. There are other important steps that we will need to take to address violent crime over the long term, including improving the availability of treatment for Delawareans struggling with substance abuse problems, preparing inmates who are being released from our prisons for productive jobs, and providing adequate summer and after-school activities for our youth. But it is vital that we also take immediate measures to reduce violent crime. > > My seven-point plan seeks to reduce violent crime by using the Attorney General’s role as the highest ranking and most visible law enforcement officer in the state, as well as the Attorney General’s responsibility to approve or disapprove plea bargains, prioritize enforcement efforts, work with the General Assembly to prioritize criminal justice resources, and work with the judiciary to improve bail and sentencing decisions. > > This new plan, which can be read in its entirety here includes: > > An expanded and visible presence of law enforcement officers from multiple state agencies in the state’s high crime areas, including the City of Wilmington. > Aggressive prosecution by the Attorney General’s office of the illegal sale, possession or use of guns. > Working with Delaware courts that have been identified by law enforcement as releasing violent offenders on bail or imposing insufficient sentences on violent offenders to reverse those practices, and reviewing the Attorney General’s office’s own practices with respect to sentencing and bail requests for violent criminals. > Affirmative, organized efforts, overseen personally by the Attorney General, to establish trust and dialogue with law-abiding citizens in high crime areas. > Increased scrutiny of known criminals in high crime areas by the Division of Probation and Parole. > Bolstering of grass-roots community organizations in high-crime areas, by securing funds through the General Assembly for those organizations to build the organizational capacity to apply for state, federal, and private grants. > A focus in the Attorney General’s office on working with law enforcement to establish cases against criminal enterprises and high-level offenders. > This plan is the product of my own observations as chair of the state’s Criminal Justice Council, practices that have proven successful in other states at reducing the incidence of violent crime, and a series of meetings I held with law enforcement and community members throughout the state. Most importantly, all of the steps outlined in this new plan are achievable, and they are all steps that can and should be taken by an aggressive Attorney General’s office to effect a reduction in violent crime. > > Reducing Delaware’s violent crime rate is important for the state’s well-being, but the issue is also personal to me. I began my career as a lawyer 25 years ago working out of church basements, shelters, and community centers in some of the neighborhoods that are now hardest hit by crime. I know these neighborhoods, and I know that the vast majority of people who live there are hard-working, honest people. And it is unacceptable that their lives and their children’s lives have been thrown into chaos by our high rates of violent crime. > > Of course, long-term solutions to the state’s violent crime problems would also require action on a range of other issues, including substance abuse treatment, job training and placement for inmates being released back into the community, summer and after-school programming for youth, and the state’s early childhood and education systems as a whole. In the coming days, I will be announcing specific proposals in a number of these arenas. > > Other Campaign Business - Yard Signs > > On a somewhat different note, we have received yard signs, a necessary staple of all campaigns. While, contrary to some popular beliefs, these signs do not in fact vote, they do help bring awareness to my campaign, and are a welcome show of support. If you would like one, please respond to this e-mail and let us know, and we will help connect you to the nearest sign depository. > > Until next time, > > Matt > > > > > > Paid for by The Denn Campaign > > > PO Box 1327 > Dover, DE 19903 > > > To unsubscribe from this mailing list, click here > Powered by NGP VAN, Inc
