From the School
QUERY
“Many new friendships are sprouting this spring, many old ones have blossomed. How can we plant a friendship that will grow to bring peace to the world?”
- Grade 3A MESSAGE FROM CFO MIKE SAXENIAN
Please, while on campus, no idling while waiting. We value the fresh air. And, absolutely no cell phone usage while driving. We have many students but none to spare!NOTE FROM RICH ON RETIRING TEACHERS
As many of you have heard through the grapevine, two of our magnificent teachers are retiring at the end of this school year – Pam Selden and Christine Fernsler. Both of these teachers have been at Lower School for over 30 years. I could fill twenty pages for each of these teachers with accolades for not only their outstanding ability to teach students, but also their care and commitment to the Quaker values of Sidwell Friends. I will say much more about them in my Summer Letter and at our 4th Grade Graduation. I will also share information about our three new teachers in my Summer Letter. Rich Lodish2011-2012 CALENDAR UPDATE
The calendar for the ’11-’12 school year is available. One change has been made, Tuesday, Nov. 29 is now an early dismissal at 12:15 PM for faculty professional development. Please mark your calendars.TIME TO UPDATE HOUSEHOLD INFORMATION
It is time to update household and student information for the 2011-2012 school year. In keeping with Sidwell Friends’ environmental commitment, this information will be collected online. Information gathered will help our school community provide a safe and supportive learning environment for your child(ren). One parent can update and submit the online form for the entire household. Divorced parents will provide their household information separately. Complete the online form no later than June 1st. Report cards will be held for returning students until the online form is submitted. After completing the form, additional changes can be made beginning July 1st. Please be mindful to update household, health and contact information throughout the school year as changes occur. If parents separate during the school year, contact Valerie Foster in Admissions to create a new household.MATH NEWS
Math for Parents
The last math class for parents this year will be on Friday May 13, It will be held at 7:45 AM in the Math Lab, straight up the stairs in the Manor House. We will try to have the library open early that morning for childcare.
This last class will be on algebraic reasoning. While many of us never learned anything about algebra until the end of middle school or even later, our students are being introduced to algebraic thinking from PK on. Come learn how even the youngest students "do algebra" and how we prepare them for the formal algebra class in middle school. As part of the class, we will also be demonstrating model drawing techniques from the Singapore Math curriculum, It should be a great way to end this series.

JOIN TOM FARQUHAR FOR "CONVERSATIONS ON DIVERSITY"
The conversation continues… Join the Head of School for a second “Conversation on Diversity.” The 2012-2024 Strategic Plan, calls for the school to address issues of different ethnic and cultural groups, to celebrate and promote a community based on inclusion and respect for differences, and to encourage close interaction among students, parents, teachers, and staff with varying backgrounds, experiences, interests, and perspectives. The “Conversations on Diversity” series with Tom Farquhar is helping the Head of School and the Board to shape and articulate goals and objectives as the school prepares for our increasingly global and multicultural community and world. Come and be part of these sessions. They provide a safe space for you to hear diverse perspectives and it is our hope that these sessions also help bring enlightenment, understanding, and acceptance. The 2010-2011 Conversations on Diversity series is sponsored by the All-School PA Diversity Committee.

They made 56 bookmarks and colored 63 puzzles for the children at The Children's Inn at NIH. Every day the children at the Children’s Inn are given a small gift in their mailbox. It is something they look forward to at the end of every day. The Sidwell Friends Community helped bring 119 smiles to some very special children.
REFLECTIONS ON ALL AROUND THE WORLD EVENT AT SPRING FESTIVAL
We held our first World Friends For World Peace event on Saturday
We are so glad that you came along
We exchanged photo embossed World Traveler passports for a smile
While the cool DJ played his song
Russia, Iran, Turkey, Ethiopia and Brazil reps
enhanced the children with knowledge
And the Peace Flags quilt knitted a community together
In a way all Quakers would encourage
So there is No Way to Peace they say
Peace is the Way. Everyday.
And that's our song.
With Gratitude,
The LS PA Diversity Committee
