The idea that only 50% pay "income" tax is a ridiculous argument. The number of people who pay taxes is much higher when you include payroll taxes. And if you look at the people who don't pay income taxes it is the poor who pay payroll taxes (if they have a job and INCOME) or the elderly who are on social security. Or kids. And those who just pay payroll taxes probably pay a larger percentage than they should. But this argument is taking hold. TO TAX OR NOT TO TAX: 'BROADENING THE BASE' -- Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) Tuesday said he wanted to broaden the base of folks who pay income taxes. Cantor said '50 percent of the people in this country' are not paying income tax, and 'most people would say that 'everybody should have some skin in the game and pay their fair share.'' But wouldn't that be a tax increase, reporters asked? Cantor declined to answer that question, saying that 'broadening the base is something that I think most people will say is a necessary element to create jobs.' When asked who should be paying more taxes, Cantor also declined to answer. Eric D.
