From the School
QUERY
“Many new friendships are sprouting this spring, many old ones have blossomed. How can we plant a friendship that will grow to bring peace to the world?”
- Grade 3
LAST DAY OF SCHOOL: THURSDAY, JUNE 9 AT 12:00 NOON
The last day of school for all Lower School students is Thursday, June 9. We hold the 4th grade graduation ceremony from 9:15-10:00 AM in the gym. Only 4th grade families are invited to this event (we cannot accommodate parties of more than six per family). The 4th graders enjoy the ceremony, join their families for a reception, and then leave campus for a swim party.
All PK through Grade 3 students attend the graduation ceremony and then return to classrooms for the remainder of the morning. We dismiss the students at 12:00 noon (no lunch is served) and ask that parents pick up promptly because the LS faculty and staff are invited to a Parents Association Appreciation Lunch. The shuttle bus will run to the Wisconsin Avenue campus immediately after dismissal.
There is no Aftercare on Thursday, June 9. The last day of Aftercare is Wednesday, June 8.

CANNED VEGGIES INSTEAD OF FRESH VEGGIES!
Our vegetable chopping is done for the year, but your help is still needed! Please send your student to school with a canned vegetable (or fruit, healthy pantry item) next Wednesday and help us make sure that the food pantries have supplies for needy families during the summer! Donated foods will be delivered to Martha's Pantry and A Wider Circle. – Beth Zeugin, Community Service Committee, bczeugin@comcast.net.
THANK YOU FOR HELPING WITH COMMUNITY SERVICE
With enormous support from parents, faculty, students and administrators, our school community performed hours and hours of service this year. Together we delivered 1,200 pounds of chopped and seasoned soup vegetables to Martha's Table; we donated and read over 1,000 books to Brightwood Elementary School children; we made over 65 trips to Bethesda Cares to donate unserved lunch food; families helped at A Wider Circle and Martha's Table on weekends throughout the year; and we helped Lower School maximize its paper, bottle and can recycling. All this, just to name a few things!
On Service Days, our children formed reading partnerships with students at Brightwood, cleaned up the banks of the Anacostia River, collected acorns and other seeds and planted 8 trees for a Potomac watershed restoration project, gardened and composted vegetable trimmings at Lower School, made lasagnas for Martha’s Table, and sandwiches and bag lunches for Bethesda Cares and Martha's Table clients. Because of your deep commitment to community service and willingness to volunteer your time, our children are able to undertake meaningful projects. For the students, community service is "something we do at Lower School", a part of everyday life. Thank you for making this possible!
--Beth Zeugin, Lisa Ward, Evelyn Nicholas, Karen Lager, Community Service Committee

In addition to watching the SFS Varsity Baseball team play in the Congressional Bank Baseball Classic this weekend, you and your children can volunteer any time during the day to demonstrate your support for the charity sponsoring the event. The Classic needs both adult and student volunteers in one-hour intervals throughout the day for tasks such as player and guest check-in, helping load and unload buses of kids from DC Parks and Recreation locations around the city, providing information and directions, being a bat boy in the major league dugouts, and tossing free T-shirts to fans in the stands. Please contact Jack Koczela or Jimmy Ervin if you can help the non-profit DC High School Baseball Classic, Inc. support baseball and softball in underserved DC communities.
