Vice President Joe Biden announced on Monday that Kendra Barkoff will become his new press secretary at the end of May when Elizabeth Alexander leaves the post to practice law. Barkoff comes to Biden’s office from the Interior Department, where she served as deputy communications director and press secretary for Secretary Ken Salazar. “From the Senate to the White House, for the last five years, Elizabeth has been by my side as a trusted adviser. Together, we’ve logged a lot of miles, and through it all she’s been tough, determined, and loyal. Her energy, intellect, and professionalism will be missed enormously, even as I’m excited for her to start the next chapter of her career,” Biden said of Alexander. And of Barkoff: “We’re looking forward to Kendra joining the team. She has extensive communications and press experience and will be a tremendous asset to our office and the entire White House.” Before moving to the Interior Department, Barkoff worked as the press secretary for Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., as Democratic media coordinator and press assistant for Senate Majority Whip Richard Durbin, D-Ill., and as a communications aide for Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash. She graduated with a degree in political science from Washington University in St. Louis. Barkoff is not the only recent addition to Biden’s office. In March, he picked Washington Post reporter Shailagh Murray to become his communications director after Jay Carney took over as White House press secretary. Want the news first every morning?
