Sunday - September 7, 2014 Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Announcements WISCONSIN AVENUE GARAGE GUIDELINES CHANGES TO THE UPPER SCHOOL WEEKLY E-NEWSLETTER Events ALL PARENTS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND THE FIRST PA MEETING SEPT. 8 GAME TIME! BLACK ALUMNI REFLECT ON SFS EXPERIENCE Other QUAKER QUOTE FOLLOW THE SCHOOL ON SOCIAL MEDIA News Around the School LS News Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Query for the Month of September, written by the Upper School Quaker Life Committee: “As we begin a new school year, what can we preserve, change, or embrace to allow us to be creative and productive while maintaining our peace of mind?” Friends, Members of the senior class opened Thursday’s Meeting for Worship with the above query, and the entire community gathered in silent reflection to ponder the promises that the new school year holds for us all. The 2014/15 academic school year is underway. Students should now be settling into their regular routines. Please remember that Tuesday, September 9, is the last day to add a new class. By now, students should also have ordered all of their textbooks and purchased materials for their classes. If your student is having difficulty with purchasing textbooks, please reach out to your student’s advisor and encourage your student to speak directly to his or her teachers. Fall P.E. classes begin this Monday, September 8. Students unsure of their P.E. class schedule can refer to the P.E. class lists posted on the bulletin board in the language classroom hallway, or e-mail Katey Vale (valek@sidwell.edu), the administrative assistant to the director of athletics. This past Wednesday, the Honor Committee offered a thoughtful and engaging presentation on the role it plays in the School’s disciplinary process. The Honor Committee performed a skit, simulating an Honor case and allowing the student body to participate in the process. What ensued was a thoughtful discussion about the role of the Honor Code and the committee in our community. We encourage you to ask your students about this important presentation and engage them in a conversation about our Honor Code. In the next few weeks, the student body will learn more about the important role that the Student Government plays in our school. If you have a 9th grade student who is interested in running for Student Government or the Honor Committee, please remind him or her to notify Ms. Scattergood, the 9th grade dean. Ninth grade elections will be held September 29 during class meeting time. General elections for all other grades will take place in the spring. Important Dates: September 9: Last Day to Add a New Class September 11, 7:45 to 8:45 a.m.: 9th Grade Parent Conversation with US Administration, Choral Room September 11, 7 p.m.: 12th Grade Parent Night with College Counseling, RLS Meeting Room September 16: Last Day to Request Pass/Fail or Drop a Class September 17, 7:45 to 8:45 a.m.: 12th Grade Parent Conversation with US Administration, Choral Room September 18, 6:45 p.m.: Back-to-School Night, Robert L. When parked, students can be alerted as to the meeting point via cell phone. Zartman Circle is also available for drop-off and pick-up and, when parked, students can be alerted as to the meeting point via cell phone. Direct students to enter and exit vehicles on the curb side only. Pull as far forward and to the right as you can when picking up or dropping off students to allow others to drop off or pick up behind you or pass you on the left. Do not allow car to idle. Please support the environment and the health of our community by parking in a space and turning off your car when waiting. Parents picking up Lower School students who arrive by shuttle bus are encouraged to use lower level parking. The lower level provides easy access to the Lower School bus by the north stairwell, which is easy and safe to navigate with children. Do not wait in the pick-up/drop-off lane, and do not block parked cars while waiting in the parking area. Do not block key intersections at Rodman Street, the Post Office, or in the garage. Continue through the garage in order to avoid blocking traffic, or park on the lower level of the garage if the top level is full. Use caution when exiting by the Post Office. This drive is shared by the Post Office and student walkers, who are often distracted or walking with headphones. Please be aware that there are two traffic signals for cars exiting onto Wisconsin Avenue: The one on the left directs vehicles exiting and entering the Post Office. Proceed on green from the signal on the right, and please do not honk at cars ahead of you who are waiting for their signal. Please be respectful and patient. It is not always possible to get in and out of the garage quickly, especially at peak times. Plan your activities accordingly, and remember that safety comes first. Many thanks for doing your part to keep our community safe. Questions or comments? Please contact Kathi Webb at webbk@sidwell.edu. Other QUAKER QUOTE "Quakerism began in the 1650s with the teachings of an Englishman, George Fox. Fox was raised in the Puritan faith, a very strict form of Christianity. However, he was unhappy with his faith and was not interested in other denominations he investigated. He felt that their practices and beliefs had become complicated and impersonal, far removed from Jesus's lessons of simplicity and modesty. Fox passionately wanted a simpler faith, one that could give him a personal and direct connection with God. When he was still a teenager, Fox began wandering around England in search of answers. During this period, he had a series of visions...Fox's visions revealed to him that a part of God's spirit lives in every person. He called this spirit the Inner Light. Fox believed the Inner Light was a way for people to have a direct connection with God." ---From What Makes Me A Quaker by Adam Woog Quaker quotes are intended to deepen the understanding and appreciation of Quakerism in the parent community at Sidwell Friends.
