By Elizabeth Titus ( mailto:etitus@politico.com etitus@politico.com , @emtitus) and Jose DelReal ( mailto:jdelreal@politico.com jdelreal@politico.com , @jdelreal) With Tarini Parti and James Hohmann KOCH-LINKED VETS' GROUP GOES BIG IN IOWA: Concerned Veterans for America is launching a $2.4-million ad campaign in Iowa highlighting Democratic Senate candidate Bruce Braley's attendance record at House Veterans' Affairs Committee meetings, the group said today. The TV ad is backed by seven figures and is going up statewide today, said the Koch-network group in a news release. Digital ads and direct mail make up the rest of the campaign, said spokesman Bill Turenne. - The news comes on the heels of a Des Moines Register report that in 2011 and 2012, Braley "missed 75 percent of meetings ... including one meeting on a day he attended three fundraisers for his 2012 campaign" ( http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=28e379bf93f4f26c1341fbf7fec1656ee4bdf052957fc199ce1b42986eb764dc http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=28e379bf93f4f26c1341fbf7fec1656ee4bdf052957fc199ce1b42986eb764dc ) - instant campaign grist now that the Department of Veterans Affairs scandal has erupted, although the ad itself doesn't mention the Senate race or Republican Joni Ernst, only urging viewers to "tell Bruce Braley: Reform and fix the VA." A campaign spokesman told the Register "that in many cases, 'there were conflicting hearings, classified briefings, or other responsibilities that drew Bruce away.'" Avid ad-watchers will notice this spot, like others, uses footage of the 2014 fundraiser where Braley made the Chuck Grassley "farmer" comments. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=28e379bf93f4f26c0a468de428730a7c7a14dabac4553c623e9ce25411ed4f3f http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=28e379bf93f4f26c0a468de428730a7c7a14dabac4553c623e9ce25411ed4f3f ALASKA SUPER PAC EXPANDS TO RADIO: Less than a month from Alaska's Republican Senate primary, a pro-Dan Sullivan super PAC is adapting its latest TV ad to radio, operative Art Hackney said Thursday. The Alaska's Energy/America's Values ad is going up today statewide, backed by $80,000, Hackney said. The minute-long radio version drops the Joe Miller and Ted Stevens mentions and sticks to Republican Mead Treadwell and Democratic Sen. Mark Begich. "I'm really tired of Mark Begich and Mead Treadwell attacking Dan Sullivan," a woman says in the ad. "Dan is as Alaskan as it gets." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=28e379bf93f4f26cd47ffe98d203d26ed0eb5ee5965bd9b348a0be8d16e1eabb http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=28e379bf93f4f26cd47ffe98d203d26ed0eb5ee5965bd9b348a0be8d16e1eabb SENATE DEMOCRATS BRACE FOR WALSH FALLOUT - POLITICO's Manu Raju and Burgess Everett: "Despite a mountain of evidence suggesting that Walsh may have obtained a key academic credential improperly, the party leadership, Montana Democrats and members of the rank-and-file closed ranks behind the appointed senator - arguing that voters should overlook a relatively minor mistake when weighed against his military service in Iraq and career serving his country. Or, as Sen. Jon Tester put it, 'He's a soldier, not an academic.' ... Republicans expressed new confidence in Daines' chances following the Wednesday report - and some Democrats privately agreed. 'It's over,' one senior Democratic Senate source said Thursday." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=28e379bf93f4f26c31087d31736fce562b35468cbfb59f78fc24b373f4cfdc52 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=28e379bf93f4f26c31087d31736fce562b35468cbfb59f78fc24b373f4cfdc52 - Next steps: The War College "sent a letter to the senator instructing him that an investigative panel will meet next month to conclusively assess any culpability," The New York Times reported: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=28e379bf93f4f26cb0d080816ffcee9394e4c1d027f0fb6da1a2fc2ca9abecca http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=28e379bf93f4f26cb0d080816ffcee9394e4c1d027f0fb6da1a2fc2ca9abecca ... Walsh's campaign released a memo trying to start the process of righting the ship, focusing on the senator's overall military career and going on the attack against Daines. The campaign subsequently had to correct to a section of the memo about the number of IED attacks Walsh survived in Iraq. The program's website describes a six-week program, consisting of five days of 'intensive' campaign training at 270's Chicago HQ featuring Stewart and Bird and other 'architects of the 2008 and 2012 Obama campaigns,' followed by five weeks of volunteer work on an 'an important Democratic campaign in the United States.' 'That was one of the top five public relations coups of all time: making their movement pro-choice and purging the ugly word "abortion" from the lexicon for decades,' said Kellyanne Conway, a Republican pollster who has conducted research on women's issues for anti-abortion groups and the Republican National Committee. ... The latest example: Crossroads GPS says in a TV ad that Colorado Sen. Mark Udall "voted to enact a carbon tax." He did no such thing. The vote referenced in the ad was on a failed amendment to a nonbinding budget resolution. The amendment would have required any possible future carbon tax to be revenue neutral, with the tax proceeds being returned to the American people. In other words, Udall voted to support making a hypothetical tax revenue neutral. We've seen similar bogus attacks on Sens. Kay Hagan of North Carolina and Mark Begich of Alaska.
