Biden ranks 29th among top Washington golfers, magazine says

WASHINGTON -- Vice President Joe Biden would have an easy time beating his boss on the golf course, according to Golf Digest’s new ranking of Washington’s top 150 golfers.

Biden ranked 29th among the golfers with a 6.3 handicap while President Barack Obama tied for 108th place with a handicap of 17.

He also outranked House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, who tied for 43rd place with a 7.9 handicap.

Golf digest ranked Washington’s elected officials, White House staffers and senior-level lobbyists in its June issue. To determine handicaps, the magazine relied on the U.S. Golf Association’s Golf Handicap and Information Network, state associations, the politicians, lobbyists, friends and playing partners. Some handicaps without decimals were estimates.

Biden plays “frequently” with Tony Russo, vice president of federal legislative affairs for T-Mobile, who had the No. 1 ranking with a plus-2.3 handicap.

Russo, who previously worked for Biden, told the magazine he hasn’t seen Biden hit the ball as well as this year. The magazine suggests that’s because of the practice area Biden installed in the back yard of his residence on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Observatory, but his spokeswoman said no such practice area has been installed.
