The two will hold talks on re-establishing diplomatic ties broken off after Iran’s 1979 revolution. EU discusses defence The European Commission holds a conference on the region’s defence and security industries at the European Parliament, focusing on defence directives, the impact of budget cuts and bilateral co-operation, and maintaining armed forces. New York smoking ban The smoking ban in New York City is extended to parks, beaches, plazas and other public spaces including Times Square after Michael Bloomberg, the mayor, signed the legislation on February 22. NHS reform panel verdict The NHS Future Forum panel, which is scrutinising the UK government’s modernisation of the National Health Service, submits its findings to David Cameron, prime minister. Rolling stone turns 70 Bob Dylan, the American singer-songwriter who released his first album in March 1962 and whose song “Blowin’ in the Wind” became a civil rights anthem, celebrates his 70th birthday. OECD 50th anniversary Nicolas Sarkozy, Angela Merkel and Hillary Clinton gather in Paris for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s 50th anniversary forum, held over two days. The Better Policies for Better Lives initiative focuses on green growth, sharing global wealth, and policies for a cleaner and fairer world. Reducing bank risk The UK’s Independent Commission on Banking holds a public meeting ahead of a final report in September, focusing on competition and ways of reducing risk at banks. FT Reports Commodities Wednesday MAY 25 Bond is back Carte Blanche, the new James Bond book written by Jeffery Deaver, launches at a secret London event ahead of Thursday’s publication, days before the 103rd anniversary of creator Ian Fleming’s birth (May 28). ‘Cookies’ law takes effect A European law requiring organisations’ websites that track users’ “cookies” – the personal information stored by PCs – to gain explicit permission from site visitors comes into effect in the UK. Investment and growth The World Investment conference begins in La Baule, France, focusing on technology, business, investments and policies to stimulate global growth (until May 27). FT Reports Mastering Growth World’s Top Analysts Thursday MAY 26 France G8 summit opens The G8 summit of world leaders opens in Deauville, France, hosted by Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, with Barack Obama arriving from a state visit to the UK. The summit will cover issues including energy, food security, arms control, climate change and partnerships with Africa. IMF capital flows The International Monetary Fund discusses managing capital flows in emerging markets at a conference with Guido Mantega, Brazil’s finance minister, over two days in Rio de Janeiro. Friday MAY 27 Takeovers consultation The UK Takeover Panel’s consultation on amendments to the Takeover Code closes, which could shorten the time companies have to clarify their position on an offer and increase disclosure requirements. FT Reports Yachts & Marinas Saturday MAY 28 Football final Barcelona and Manchester United play the Uefa Champions League Final at Wembley in London in a repeat of the 2009 Rome final, which the Catalans won 2-0.
