Mexico hosts trade talks Cristina Fernández, president of Argentina, is due to visit Mexico for trade talks with her counterpart Felipe Calderón. EU discusses business aid Measures to help small and medium size businesses are to be discussed by the European Union’s Competitiveness Council at a two-day meeting in Brussels. Nanotechnology explored EuroNanoForum begins its three-day run in Budapest, offering an exhibition of nanotechnology-enabled products and a conference discussing the science’s applications in the industrial, environmental, and health spheres. Human rights promoted The 17th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council opens in Geneva (until June 17). Taxpayers celebrate Tax freedom day, when people stop working for the government and begin working for themselves, is marked in the UK, says the Adam Smith Institute. It has calculated that all money earned between January 1 and May 29 was taken by the taxman. US and UK take holidays The US celebrates Memorial day and the UK its spring bank holiday. Fifa congress and election Fifa, football’s world governing body, holds its 61st congress over two days in Zurich. In the election for president, incumbent Sepp Blatter is set to stand unopposed following the withdrawal of Mohamed bin Hammam amid bribery allegations. Wednesday JUNE 1 ILO stages 100th gathering Member states of the International Labour Organisation meet in Geneva for the 100th annual International Labour Conference (until June 17). Tokyo hosts bankers Central bankers and academics attend the Bank of Japan’s two-day conference, “Real and Financial Linkage and Monetary Policy”. Levant potential examined The Levant Region Trade and Investment Conference takes place in Beirut, focusing on opportunities in Lebanon, Jordan, Syria and Iraq. Private equity analysed The Oxford Private Equity Forum brings together at the Saïd Business School private equity practitioners, investors and advisers to discuss opportunities and challenges facing the industry. Broadbent joins MPC Ben Broadbent, a former Goldman Sachs economist, replaces Andrew Sentance on the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee, which sets UK interest rates. Land warfare debated The two-day Land Warfare Conference is staged by the Royal United Services Institute in London. Friday JUNE 3 Spotlight on Asia security The Shangri-La Dialogue, the security and defence conference for Asia staged by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, opens in Singapore (until June 5). Cities confer on climate Resilient Cities, the second world congress on urban adaptation to climate change, opens in Bonn (until June 5). Delegates from leading cities around the world will discuss and exchange information on policies and programmes. American nations meet The general assembly of the Organisation of American States meets in El Salvador (until June 7), with foreign ministers representing the 35 member countries.
