First African Leaders Forum on Intellectual Disability Announced


Her Excellency President Joyce Banda of the Republic of Malawi, a vocal champion of the rights and protections of those with intellectual disabilities, has [1] announced that she will host the first-ever African Leaders Forum on Intellectual Disability in partnership with Special Olympics in February 2014 in Lilongwe, Malawi. The commitment is a result of her participation at the Global Development Summit at the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Korea. [2] READ MORE


First Year Shows Power of Healthy Communities


September marks the one-year anniversary since Special Olympics launched its Healthy Communities initiative at the 2012 Clinton Global Initiative. Through the initiative, Special Olympics Programs are expanding the reach of Special Olympics Healthy Athletes clinics and providing free follow-up health care worldwide. In just the first year, Healthy Athletes clinics were held in 54 new locations, providing services for 11,476 previously underserved people with intellectual disabilities. [3] READ MORE

Timothy Shriver's Finding An Invisible Peoplefeatured on Huffington Post


Special Olympics Chairman and CEO Timothy Shriver's blog post, Finding An Invisible People, was featured on The Huffington Post on September 24 . He writes, "From remote villages in rural Malawi, to top universities...to YMCAs in New York and Kansas, Special Olympics Programs are currently -- as CGI calls on all of us to do this year -- mobilizing for impact, by transforming the way communities, governments, businesses and sports address health for people with intellectual disabilities." Help the World Hear Their Story


Special Olympics has long been following the story of Amelia Rivera and her parents, Chrissy and Joe Rivera. Now that Amelia has a healthy and functioning kidney, Chrissy and Joe are sharing their story with the world so others can learn from Amelia’s experience. Last month, Special Olympics had the honor of welcoming Chrissy and Joe to a dinner hosted with the Golisano Foundation at CGI. At the event, Chrissy spoke and shared their family’s story.
