*HISTORY - The Democratic Black Caucus of Florida *


The Democratic Black Caucus of Florida was *actually conceived of during
meetings in Broward County* at the Westin Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood,
Florida during at the 1981 Florida State Democratic Party Convention


The Democratic Black Caucus of Florida was established in 1983, to unite
and increase the political power for Black Democrats who went unnoticed.
The Caucus is an integral part of the Florida Democratic Party’s
infrastructure, which unites talent with opportunity to facilitate voter
building through educational forums effecting voter registration drives
(EVRD), get out the vote (GOTV), voter action network (VAN), vote by mail
(VBM), and support qualified candidates approved by the Black Caucus.

Black delegates at the 1981 Florida State Democratic Party Convention in
Hollywood, Florida, felt the need for increasing the power and influence of
Black Democrats within the party. A decision was made at the Convention to
unite Black Democrats throughout the State, resulting in the organization
of the Democratic Black Caucus of Florida. The caucus was recognized on
September 24, 1983, by the Florida Democratic Party

NOTE: The original founders included our Representatives to the US Congress
Carrie Meek, and Corrine Brown as well as community activists such as Hazel
Armbrister. Our biggest supporters are Congressman Alcee Hastings, FL
Representatives Gwyn Clarke-Reed, Hazelle Rogers, and Perry Thurston (now
candidate for Attorney General).
