Tuesday - May 10, 2011 From the School This Week's Query How can we reach out to people who are isolated?Notes from Sally This week’s assembly: The Peace Corps with alumnus David Mills ’01. Parents of current 6th graders – we look forward to seeing you tonight for the Transition Meeting about 7th grade! The 7th and 8th graders will be out on a Service Day this Thursday. The Vertical Voices troupe will be performing Friday at the Milton Hershey School. 5th through 8th grade parents: Many students benefit from activities that help them maintain their math skills over the summer. Whether you feel your child needs enrichment and/or review, please contact your child’s math teacher if you feel that summer work would beneficial for your child. (Please be assured that your child’s teacher will contact you if he or she feels that summer work is necessary for your child.) Your child’s math teacher can give you recommendations about resources and materials that would be best suited to your child’s needs. He or she can also give you guidance about tutoring arrangements, summer review courses, and enrichment programs if those are relevant for your child. It is time to update household and student information for the 2011-2012 school year. In keeping with Sidwell Friends’ environmental commitment, this information will be collected online. All households, including new and returning families, need to confirm their contact information. Additionally, a custodial parent/guardian must complete a health questionnaire, and provide health insurance and emergency contact information, for each child. Due date: June 1st. Report cards will be held for returning students until the online form is submitted. You should have received an email Monday, May 2nd, with specific instructions for accessing the forms on our website. Please be mindful to update household, health and contact information throughout the school year as changes occur. If you need assistance, contact Jane Lenherr at (202) 537-8169 or registrar@sidwell.edu. There is now a community garden on the Hearst School property! If you live nearby and would be interested in helping to maintain the garden over the summer, please let me know; I will put you in touch with the coordinator. Congratulations to 8th grader Gavin Springer, who competed in swim competitions in Luxembourg over the last couple of weeks. Gavin has returned with five medals. The 2012-2024 Strategic Plan, calls for the school to address issues of different ethnic and cultural groups, to celebrate and promote a community based on inclusion and respect for differences, and to encourage close interaction among students, parents, teachers, and staff with varying backgrounds, experiences, interests, and perspectives. The “Conversations on Diversity” series with Tom Farquhar is helping the Head of School and the Board to shape and articulate goals and objectives as the school prepares for our increasingly global and multicultural community and world. Come and be part of these sessions. They provide a safe space for you to hear diverse perspectives and it is our hope that these sessions also help bring enlightenment, understanding, and acceptance.
