Greece on EU agenda The 17 European Union eurozone finance ministers meet in Brussels. The Eurogroup meetings are followed by an Ecofin council meeting of all EU finance ministers tomorrow, which is likely to discuss Greece, deferral of budget targets, easing loan terms, international aid and sovereign debt. Support in older age Think-tank Demos launches its Coming of Age pamphlet, which draws on research with older people. Launched in London, it will set out goals for public policy, leading to a strategy for supporting people to realise later life ambitions. Towards Nordic balance Sigbjørn Johnsen, Norwegian finance minister, gives a lecture called “Equality, Growth and Sustainability – an Impossible Combination?” at the London School of Economics. He will argue that equality and growth are often considered conflicting goals. Energy for the future The third International Conference on Applied Energy, in Perugia, Italy, will assess developments in applied energy, renewable energy sources and the mitigation of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Competitive congress The third European Economic Congress is in Katowice, Poland. Some 400 speakers are to attend. The main topic will be a “competitive European economy”, looking at what is being done to compete successfully with Asia and the Americas. Tuesday MAY 17 Pakistan’s role examined The foreign relations committee of the US Senate meets in Washington to hear testimony on the strategic implications of Pakistan and its region. Witnesses include General James L. Jones, former national security adviser and Nato commander. Buddhist holy day The Buddhist festival of Vesak, marking Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death, is celebrated. Kenyan trade talks The Annual East Africa Trade and Export Finance Conference is held at the Norfolk Hotel, in Nairobi, Kenya, bringing together decision-makers from banks, export credit agencies, the legal profession and commodity trading.Text Strides for healthcare A march to save the NHS is staged from University College Hospital in central London to the Department of Health, Whitehall. Royal visit to Ireland The Queen starts a three-day visit to Ireland, the first by a British monarch since 1912, during which she will make a speech at Dublin Castle on relations between the two countries. Wednesday MAY 18 Colditz medal auctioned A medal awarded to a Colditz prisoner who escaped during the second world war by squeezing through a cellar to the castle moat goes under the hammer. The Distinguished Service Order of Lieutenant Colonel “Ronnie” Littledale is expected to fetch £12,000 when auctioned by Dix Noonan Webb in London. Barroso conference speech The Brussels Economic Forum, flagship economic conference of the European Commission, looks into crisis exit strategies as an opportunity to create new sources of growth and enhance European Union competitiveness, with a focus on the role combating climate change should play in the post-crisis growth model. José Manuel Barroso, Commission president, delivers a keynote speech, while economic and monetary affairs commissioner Olli Rehn, and the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, are also due to speak. Mahler centenary noted The centenary of the death at 51 of Gustav Mahler, the late-Romantic Austrian composer of dramatic and multi-layered symphonies who was a leading conductor of his generation, is marked. As a composer, he acted as a bridge between the 19th century Austro-German tradition and 20th century modernism. Thursday MAY 19 Hillary Clinton testifies The foreign relations committee of the US Senate hears testimony in Washington on evaluating progress in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Witnesses are to include Hillary Clinton, secretary of state. Asian women inspire Winners of this year’s Asian Women of Achievement awards are announced at The London Hilton, Park Lane. Theresa May, UK home secretary, will attend the ceremony. Baltic seaside conference The annual European Maritime Day Conference will be held in Gdansk, Poland (until May 20). Co-organisers are the European Commission. Friday MAY 20 Brown’s global appeal Former British prime minister Gordon Brown launches a report in Johannesburg challenging world leaders, meeting at the G8 in Deauville, France, on May 26, to address an education crisis. New research in the ex-Labour leader’s report will show that more than 100m children could be lifted out of poverty is they could read and write, and that investing in education would add 2 per cent to a country’s growth. Cardiff challengers Harlequins and Stade Français play in the final of the Amlin Challenge Cup rugby union tournament at Cardiff City Stadium, Cardiff. Last orders for rail diners East Coast, the mainline rail operator preparing for re-privatisation, withdraws the last 15 restaurant cars on the route, the final service between King’s Cross, London, and Doncaster leaving at 7.33pm. It is replaced with “at-seat” dining. The line had served freshly cooked food from 1879 with only a break during wartime to save fuel costs. Saturday MAY 21 Final scrumdown Ireland’s Leinster and Northampton Saints play the final of rugby union’s Heineken Cup at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. Sunday MAY 22 Cyprus goes to the polls An election takes place in Cyprus for 80 places in the House of Representatives. Under its proportional representation electoral system they will serve five-yea terms.
