Wednesday - May 11, 2011 From the School From the Upper School The first ever Welcome Event for all rising 9th graders and their parents was a huge success on Monday, May 9. Ninth grade advisors met with their advisees and their parents after an introduction by Head of School Tom Farquhar and the Upper School administration. A huge thank you to the Parents Association for organizing a picnic following the event. Collection this week will be Tom Farquhar providing an update to the Upper School students on the Strategic Planning Process. Dear Parents/Guardians of the Class of 2011, As you know, our seniors have begun their senior projects, and we are now beginning to receive requests from parents who wish to attend senior project presentations on June 9. While we would love to extend an invitation to all the parents of our seniors, space limitations in our classrooms and in the auditorium make it impossible for us to accommodate any visitors on that day. June 9th is also the last day that our seniors will spend as high school students. It is a day when Upper School teachers and students come together to celebrate the graduating class. We thank you for your understanding.Scapino! May 20-22 in the Arts Center Theater! The Upper School Spring Play, to be performed on May 20 and 21 at 8:00 pm and May 22 at 2:30 pm in the Arts Center theater, is Scapino! Scapino! is a wonderful piece of comic madness, inspired by Moliere's Les Fourberies de Scapin. It was a huge hit on Broadway, inspiring critics to write: "An evening of sheer delight." NY Post "One of the most joyous events of the season. Jubilant!" The New Yorker "If you miss it you will be crazy, and if you let your kids miss it, you will be simply inhuman." NY Times Tickets will be available at the door beginning one hour before curtain. Adults: $8.00. Students: $4.00. SFS Students: FREE! For additional information, contact: boxoffice@sidwell.edu or 202-537-8141 ext. 2. (Note: a jukebox is needed for the production. If you, or a friend, have a jukebox that we could borrow, please contact: Ed Crow, Director, at 202-537-8146 or crowe@sidwell.edu. Thanks for your help.)Art Show and Reception -- May 20, 4:30-6:00 pm ANNOUNCING A FEAST FOR THE EYES and IMAGINATION! And YOU ARE INVITED! PA Announcements "Conversation on Diversity": May 16th The conversation continues… Join the Head of School for a second “Conversation on Diversity.” The 2012-2024 Strategic Plan, calls for the school to address issues of different ethnic and cultural groups, to celebrate and promote a community based on inclusion and respect for differences, and to encourage close interaction among students, parents, teachers, and staff with varying backgrounds, experiences, interests, and perspectives. The “Conversations on Diversity” series with Tom Farquhar is helping the Head of School and the Board to shape and articulate goals and objectives as the school prepares for our increasingly global and multicultural community and world. Come and be part of these sessions. They provide a safe space for you to hear diverse perspectives, and it is our hope that these sessions also help bring enlightenment, understanding, and acceptance. The 2010-2011 Conversations on Diversity series is sponsored by the All-School PA Diversity Committee.
