HISTORY MADE - "Clinton breaks the glass ceiling," by POLITICO's Nolan D. McCaskill: "Delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia formally nominated Clinton for president, a historic moment making the former first lady the first woman in American history to be named the presidential nominee of a major political party - in the city where this nation was born - eight and four years after the first black president was elected and reelected. Clinton herself recognized this historic moment long ago. When she lost the nomination in 2008, she acknowledged that 'we weren't able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time,' but 'thanks to you, it's got about 18
million cracks in it.' This year proved to be the final blow. Clinton secured the commitment of enough delegates last month, joking to her supporters that they weren't going to smash the glass ceiling they were all standing under. 'Thanks to you, we've reached a milestone: the first time in our nation's history that a woman will be a major party's nominee,' she added." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs ededec704a1d8f8f0cdbdf55b8b62891e8466d288bf48bec2d1fb0ceffe90b

- Clinton appeared via satellite to close out day 2 of the convention: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs ededec704a1d8f53bef01e910c082793e8bc1fb8e49b65e02793f54bdf0e8e

- 2008 REMIX - "Sanders puts Clinton over the top," by POLITICO's Louis Nelson and Kyle Cheney: "Bernie Sanders on Tuesday night gave Hillary Clinton the last, hard-won nudge to become the Democratic Party's presidential nominee ... the final - and grandest - conciliatory gesture in the long-running melodrama that threatened to tear apart the Democratic Party and sowed discord during the first day of the party's national convention on Monday. ... 'I move that all votes cast by delegates be reflected in the official record, and I move that Hillary Clinton be selected as the nominee of the Democratic Party for president of the United States,' the Vermont senator said."

- Bill Clinton: Hillary is the 'Real One,'" by POLITICO's Nick Gass: "Bill Clinton delivered a forceful and deeply personal testimony on behalf of Hillary Clinton on Tuesday night at the Democratic National Convention. Boasting about her accomplishments over the course of her decades in public life, Clinton declared, 'she did all of this while being a full-time worker, a mother, and enjoying our life.' 'Why? Well, she is insatiably curious, she's a natural leader, she's a good organizer, and the best darn change-maker I have ever met in my entire life,' Clinton said, as attendees raised signs and cheered." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs ededec704a1d8f36464e349bd3677d5d00ce52c1a0dd5799d670756cace868

- MACK ATTACK - "Clinton friend McAuliffe says Clinton will flip on TPP, then walks it back," by POLITICO's Annie Karni in Philadelphia: "Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, longtime best friend to the Clintons, said Tuesday that he believes Hillary Clinton will support the TPP trade deal if elected president, with some tweaks. ... 'Once the election's over, and we sit down on trade, people understand a couple things we want to fix on it but going forward we got to build a global economy.' Pressed on whether Clinton would turn around and support the trade deal she opposed during the heat of the primary fight against Bernie Sanders , McAuliffe said: 'Yes. Listen, she was in support of it. There
were specific things in it she wants fixed.' Later, McAuliffe's spokesman sought to clarify the governor's remarks after this story published, saying he was simply expressing what he wants Clinton to do if she is elected president. 'While Governor McAuliffe is a supporter of the TPP, he has no expectation Secretary Clinton would change her position on the legislation and she has never told him anything to that effect.' A top Clinton campaign official said the Democratic nominee never told McAuliffe she would be open to changing her position on TPP - and campaign chairman John Podesta confirmed to POLITICO she never said anything like that to her longtime ally."

AWKWARD - "Cruz, advisers collide over high-stakes GOP primary," by POLITICO's Alex Isenstadt: "Ted Cruz isn't just colliding with Donald Trump since the Republican convention. He's also at odds with some of his own advisers. At issue: A high-profile primary challenge to Kansas Rep. Tim Huelskamp, a Cruz ally and tea party favorite who has long been a thorn in the side of the party establishment. Cruz has rushed to Huelskamp's aid, providing him with a valuable endorsement just weeks before the Aug. 2 primary. But members of the Texas senator's political team are working aggressively to defeat the embattled congressman. Two of the pillars of Cruz's political operation, the consulting firms
Axiom Strategies and Wilson Perkins Allen Opinion Research, have helped steer a super PAC that is spending heavily to defeat Huelskamp, a member of the conservative, Cruz-friendly House Freedom Caucus - even though Jeff Roe, Cruz's former campaign manager and Axiom's top strategist, had previously pledged that he and his firm wouldn't oppose Huelskamp." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs ededec704a1d8fe3d07eb3d6e85d10579d81f9920ca64b2aad293c6376b1eb

- Speaking of Huelskamp ... Americans for Prosperity is intervening on Huelskamp's behalf ahead of his tough primary: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs ededec704a1d8f52a889635a63c3aef0542cd7e53316c687fd061eed498ae2

- Club for Growth Action extended its ad buy an additional week and released a new TV ad running through Tuesday's primary on broadcast and cable stations in Wichita and Topeka, asking viewers: "Have you seen the ads calling Roger Marshall conservative? Don't be fooled. Check the facts." The ad says Marshall "supports more Washington debt, opposes full repeal of Obamacare, supports internet sales taxes and funded a Democrat's campaign." Like the Club for Growth did in Georgia's 3rd District runoff, they cast Marshall as "a liberal." RUNOFF RESULTS - Drew Ferguson beats Mike Crane in Georgia's 3rd District runoff: "Former West Point Mayor Drew Ferguson won the Republican primary runoff for retiring Rep. Lynn Westmoreland's seat tonight, claiming victory in a race that drew millions of dollars in outside spending from GOP groups. Ferguson had 54 percent of the vote to state Sen. Mike Crane's 46 percent when the Associated Press called the race with 97 percent of precincts reporting in Georgia's 3rd District. Ferguson won an endorsement from Westmoreland, money-raising support from House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, and outside group backing from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and ESAFund, a GOP super PAC. Crane had
high-profile backers, too, including Sen. Ted Cruz and the Club for Growth. The Club's super PAC spent more than $800,000 on an ad campaign that cast Ferguson as 'a liberal.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs ededec704a1d8f05d1db0bcc87d7df33a0f6f0a04a5bf68e4358c3bca89bbf

THIS MAN IS ON FIRE - "Grayson implodes," by Campaign Pro's Kevin Robillard and Marc Caputo: "Rep. Alan Grayson's Senate campaign began disintegrating Tuesday as supporters and a top consultant abandoned him in the wake of a POLITICO report detailing decades of domestic-abuse allegations from his wife. The fallout could have the effect of drying up hard-to-come-by cash for the struggling campaign, just as vote-by-mail ballots are about to go out for Florida's August 30 primary. The candidate has already seen one set of campaign staffers quit en masse, and has been dogged by an ethics investigation into his ownership of a Cayman Islands hedge fund and ties to slave labor in Africa. The
congressman, through a spokesman, denied his ex-wife's claims of battery, which were detailed in police and court records dating to 1994. But the political damage was severe nonetheless." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs6a7d62bb8f2936060989ca2444af7c787d928277926a18fe653166c6a5a431

NEW TO THE BALLOT - "Lt. Gov. Eric Holcomb wins Indiana GOP nod to replace Pence on governor ballot," by Campaign Pro's Kevin Robillard: "Indiana Gov. Mike Pence's number two, Lt. Gov. Eric Holcomb, will replace Pence on the state's gubernatorial ballot after winning a vote of the state Republican Party committee Tuesday. The former state party chairman and chief of staff to Sen. Dan Coats beat Reps. Susan Brooks and Todd Rokita to the nomination and will face Democratic former state House Speaker John Gregg, who narrowly lost to Pence four years ago. Pence withdrew from his reelection race several weeks ago, after Donald Trump tapped him as his vice-presidential running mate, because
Indiana law prohibits appearing twice on the same ballot. Now Holcomb, who has never won an election before, faces a grueling sprint to November in one of the country's most hotly contested governor's races. And he might not be able to benefit from all of the $7 million war chest Pence built up for his reelection run" before Trump picked him, because of FEC regulations. - The Indianapolis Star's Tony Cook has Republicans working to fix the issue: "Marc Lotter, a spokesman for Pence's vice presidential campaign, did not dispute Noble's analysis, which is based to two FEC advisory opinions from 2003 and 2007. 'Our legal team is looking into all the relevant statutes that may apply in this situation, and the governor has always said he will adhere to the letter of the law,' Lotter said. 'One thing I can guarantee you is that Eric Holcomb will have all the resources he needs to become the next governor of Indiana,' Lotter added. 'There are a number of avenues and ways we can be supportive.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs6a7d62bb8f2936620f7cd54e8c4364705159b40512a92c967f1c729ba4d858

PRESIDENTIAL SPEED READ - "President's last play: Elect an Obama generation," by POLITICO's Edward-Isaac Dovere: "President Obama has redefined the voters the Democratic Party attracts, the map that the Democratic Party competes in and the kinds of issues the Democratic Party talks about. What he hasn't built is a generation of elected officials to carry any of it on for him. ... The White House is beginning to plan an October filled with nearly non-stop political travel on behalf of both Clinton-whose campaign aides have in recent months expanded the list of places where they believe he could be helpful-and Senate candidates. Obama's team is even considering doing some travel specifically
on behalf of House candidates." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs6a7d62bb8f2936acf0528bf3f6bab91bbff32eecffd6d67aa0586e6bb5f87a

- "A Worry If Hillary Clinton Wins: What to Do With Bill," by The New York Times' Patrick Healy: "If Hillary Clinton wins the presidency, Bill Clinton will not become a regular at cabinet meetings, his wife's advisers say. He will not be invited into the Situation Room. He will step away from his family's foundation work and may not even have an office in the West Wing, given the undesirable optics of a former president and husband looking over the shoulder of the first female commander in chief. But the steps that Clinton aides are planning to shape his new life do little to address a potentially thornier problem: Historically, when Mr. Clinton does not have a job to do, he gets into
trouble. ...Putting Mr. Clinton to good use, while containing his less helpful impulses, would be a major test for Mrs. Clinton as president, given the spotlight and pressure they would be under and her limited ability in the past to rein in his excesses." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs6a7d62bb8f2936ab5b9671d168b50984f4411f6f6b8ecff408fc95166615a1

- "Spy Agency Consensus Grows That Russia Hacked D.N.C.," by The New York Times' David E. Sanger and Eric Schmitt: "American intelligence agencies have told the White House they now have "high confidence" that the Russian government was behind the theft of emails and documents from the Democratic National Committee, according to federal officials who have been briefed on the evidence. But intelligence agencies have cautioned that they are uncertain whether the electronic break-in at the committee's computer systems was intended as fairly routine cyberespionage - of the kind the United States also conducts around the world - or as part of an effort to manipulate the 2016 presidential
election." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs6a7d62bb8f2936351dcc3e6a2bfbfaccb295d0b5a9ac064ad5053081eaf0df
