Hunter- I've been attending political conventions since 1984, and there was nothing traditional about this one. As I'm sure you have read, there were smaller crowds, and more police than I've ever seen - with teams of 20 deep on bikes and horses. But a few interesting tidbits to share below. Check out the latest GLOBAL GAB with a Cleveland wrap-up, plus a look at the White House Summit on Global Development. More next week from Philly. Liz Liz Schrayer, USGLC THE GLOBAL GAB: Live from Cleveland, Trump Trumpets, and a Dem VP? July 21, 2016 GLOBAL GOP. While you may have heard the podium speeches, you might not have caught the powerful congressional voices who filled the USGLC's convention events. Speaker Paul Ryan stopped by our event with IRI, along with Senators Joni Ernst, David Perdue, and Tom Cotton - and Governor John Kasich. And Generals Conway and Hawley joined us to educate delegates and convention goers. They rallied around America's global engagement, pushed back against isolationism, and endorsed effective development and diplomacy to keep America safe. PLATFORM POLITICS. While platforms may not make the best beach reading, they do matter, as up-and-coming candidates use these blueprints for their campaign positions. Under the banner of "America's Generosity," this year's GOP platform cites foreign assistance as a "critical tool for advancing America's security and economic interests by preventing conflict and building stability" and it doubles down on a pledge to be the "best partner" with Africa. Check out our GOP platform snapshot and look for our Democratic analysis next week. http://action.usglc.org/site/R?i=DU8PNsoaZTq7lq-nt8LV-Q TRUMP TRUMPETS. In a potential preview of this evening's convention program, the GOP nominee just shook up long-standing GOP foreign policy positions. In an interview with the NY Times, he questioned America's commitment to defend our NATO allies as well as our engagement with the world. He said: "We are going to take care of this country first... before we worry about everyone else in the world." Concerning remarks ahead of tonight's speech. PODIUM INTRIGUE. Did you hear? At yesterday's USGLC coalition event at the RNC, influential conservative strategist and head of the Faith and Freedom Coalition Ralph Reed and a former White House communications director mused over how fighting global poverty hadn't yet been addressed from the convention podium, as it has at past GOP conventions. Interesting. #GLOBALDEVELOPMENT SUMMIT. Back in DC, President Obama just hosted the White House Summit on Global Development to celebrate the incredible progress the U.S. has helped make around the world. http://action.usglc.org/site/R?i=uCb1ljZ6fNHY5gRmGjCIGQ 9 million lives saved from HIV/AIDS. 60 million lives saved from measles, malaria, and TB. And in just 25 years, 1 billion people lifted out of extreme poverty. In a pivot to January 2017, he said, "Whoever the next president is, development has to remain a fundamental pillar of American foreign policy and a key part of our work to lift up lives not just overseas, but here in the United States." SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED. Two major aid bills were just signed into law by the President: the Global Food Security Act and the Foreign Aid Transparency and Accountability Act. A landmark step forward to ensure our aid programs remain smart, effective, and accountable. VP WATCH. After Cleveland, all eyes will be on the Clinton campaign for her VP announcement. Look for a special GLOBAL GAB profiling her running mate, and stay tuned for an update from Philly at the Democratic National Convention.
