By Elena Schneider | 07/26/2016 10:30 AM EDT With Scott Bland, Theodoric Meyer, Kevin Robillard and Maggie Severns The following newsletter is an abridged version of Campaign Pro's Morning Score. For an earlier morning read on exponentially more races - and for a more comprehensive aggregation of the day's most important campaign news - sign up for Campaign Pro today. (http://www.politicopro.com/proinfo) NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP - "Democrats pull convention back from the brink," by Kyle Cheney: "The Democratic National Convention began Monday with a frantic - and failed - attempt to stave off discord and disorganization, as aides to Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders struggled to prevent a prime-time revolt by Sanders allies furious over their candidate's treatment by the Democratic National Committee. Enraged Sanders allies shouted down speakers, ignoring appeals from Sanders himself to project unity. A small core of loud Clinton detractors chanted 'black lives matter' while Sen. Cory Booker delivered an upbeat speech about healing division in America. A chorus of 'we trusted you' jeers greeted Sen. Elizabeth Warren as she delivered a prime-time address. ... The unrest quieted a bit as the evening wore on - and a consistently packed arena gave warm receptions to Obama, Warren and other prominent speakers - but tension simmered below the surface as pro-Sanders delegates scrawled messages on convention signs and vented their frustration to reporters." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=be40ff889a74d3aff61d4214bdb6479b0a8b20658da47a7b10a282dbc41a478b - "... lingering resentment now threatens to undermine the carefully choreographed convention that Democrats had gloated would be free of the internal drama that rocked the GOP's show last week. As protests erupted inside and outside of the convention hall, the Sanders camp worked behind the scenes Monday to smooth things over, a Clinton official said. They reached out to the Clinton camp to express concern that emotions were still running high among Sanders supporters, despite Wasserman Schultz's exit." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=be40ff889a74d3af0d28287b1cec3c03e6f63922cdcec1837c890963978ac04f - SPEECH RECAP - "Sanders: 'Clinton must become the next president,'" by POLITICO's Katie Glueck: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=be40ff889a74d3af6cc7db3c2804051b2c36000a9de79f15a83b8a77747206bd - Read First Lady Michelle Obama's primetime speech: "My daughters - and all our sons and daughters - now take for granted that a woman can be President of the United States." Via the Chicago Sun-Times: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=be40ff889a74d3affe16bca472aff78ea18192487b82f608067eeaec66f30037 - MEANWHILE, IN WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - "Trump goes hard after 'Crazy Bernie' supporters," by POLITICO's Eli Stokols: "Donald Trump tried again Monday night to capitalize on the discord at the opening day of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, making a direct appeal to Bernie Sanders supporters. In classic Trump form, however, he did it by insulting Sanders, the Vermont socialist who defined his progressive agenda and presidential campaign as part of a "political revolution" only to finally endorse Hillary Clinton earlier this month. Pointing out another fly in the progressives' punch bowl this week, Trump claimed Clinton's choice of Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, an anti-abortion moderate, was a slap in the face to Sanders and his supporters. 'Crazy Bernie's gone crazy right now, he doesn't know what to do,' Trump said at a rally the county fairgrounds in Winston-Salem, N.C.. 'He's losing his legacy because he's just sort of giving up. He's all in for Hillary now.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=be40ff889a74d3af805fc8bab59017f8a54844fe705b2842b2ad47ee786c94f6 REVEAL AND REPLACE - "Indiana GOP to replace Pence on 2016 governor ballot Tuesday," by Campaign Pro's Kevin Robillard: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=be40ff889a74d3af393dc8bfae6a7e5f3fe23d4fb75638024a270227c15bcc9c - Also today: The GOP House primary runoff to replace retiring Rep. Sinclair, busy - Making Political Ads Work! ** NEW THIS MORNING - Freedom Partners whacks Bayh: The Koch-backed Freedom Partners super PAC is spending $1 million on television and digital ads attacking former Indiana Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh for voting for the Wall Street bailout and then taking a job at First Third BanCorp, which received $3.4 billion from TARP. "He left Indiana behind," the ad's male narrator says. The ad then spends the final 10 seconds praising GOP Rep. Todd Young. "Indiana deserves a Senator who puts us ahead of special interests." It's the first TV attack Bayh has faced since entering the race. Watch the ad here: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=5a090bf305f509aa8d82059e9b56e739931018ce51a03bc9f023f819884b6c3b - ... as the DSCC hits Young on Social Security: The DSCC's first general election TV ad of 2016, backed by about $1.3 million in Indiana, hits GOP Rep. Todd Young on Social Security: ""It matters here in Indiana: the Social Security over 800,000 Hoosiers depend on," a narrator says. "But Todd Young called Medicare and Social Security 'welfare' ... and even called Social Security 'fatally flawed' and a 'Ponzi scheme.'" Bayh is also out with a new TV spot focusing on his gubernatorial and Senate record: "Bayh worked across party lines, cutting waste and passing over $1.3 billion in tax cuts." The ad also mentions welfare reform and "tak[ing] on China stealing our jobs" as a senator. Watch the DSCC ad: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=5a090bf305f509aa63f86ddf3b9c70b2909493ec2589de97484737af9fbbf277 And watch the Bayh ad: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=5a090bf305f509aa5c0465d936862cb70650deb8e6771a9d128346b4426296f0 - ALSO NEW THIS MORNING - The Club for Growth Action out with TV spot attacking Neal Dunn in FL-02: The group accuses Dunn of "claim[ing] he's a Republican, but donated thousands in campaign money to Democrats." Instead, the ad says, Dunn is a "liberal lobbyist, Obamacare-loving, Charlie Crist Republican," the ad's narrator says. "Not what we need in Congress." The Club for Growth has endorsed Dunn's Republican primary rival, Mary Thomas, in late January. It's the third GOP House primary (including GA-03 and KS-01) the Club has advertised in recently. Pat Toomey, an "asshole" at a labor union event at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. She was following a labor leader who called Trump an "asshole," and was echoing his remarks. Republicans immediately pounced on the comments, with Senate Leadership Fund spokesman Ian Prior claiming it showed "zero class." "I regret the language I used and apologize to Senator Toomey," McGinty said. "Our campaign is about moving Pennsylvania forward and we're going to continue to talk about the issues that are important to Pennsylvania families." TWO GOP AD TRENDS TO WATCH - Tying a Democrat to Clinton in Arizona ... Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick of Arizona has built much of her campaign against GOP Sen. John McCain around tying him to his party's unpopular presidential nominee - and now McCain's campaign is returning the favor. The McCain campaign debuted a new TV ad on Monday, the opening day of the Democratic National Convention, linking Kirkpatrick to Hillary Clinton. The ad includes clips of Clinton, FBI Director James Comey, and then Kirkpatrick saying, "I'm a Hillary supporter." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=5a090bf305f509aace160742e45c42515c049feb7d35b5b962251d0007c8b635 - Opiate abuse in upstate New York... GOP Rep. John Katko has released an emotional new ad featuring a couple whose daughter was killed by an opiate-addicted ex-fiance, and whose son died after a heroin overdose two years later. "We've adopted our granddaughter. I hope she grows up in a better world than this," the woman says. "... John Katko's helped us. John Katko's been a very good ally." "He's earned the right to continue the fight," the man says. The 60-second ad follows several Senate GOP spots that have touted work on opioid abuse as a nonpartisan accomplishment in purple or blue states. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=5a090bf305f509aaf765d94ae7bf67c0a35fe31d351a6267e9e75a248b112d7b Read the backstory here in the Auburn Citizen: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=5a090bf305f509aa823d11425bd716f862707be0719a7abaebac807ff4c3f51c ARE YOU IN PHILADELPHIA? - Digital Campaigns event at the POLITICO Hub - POLITICO's Tony Romm, 270 Strategies' Betsy Hoover, Bernie 2016 Director of Digital Advertising Keegan Goudiss, Hillary for America Digital Director Jenna Lowenstein and NGP VAN CEO Stuart Trevelyan debate how democrats can win the election with technology. PRESIDENTIAL SPEED READ - "Why Putin hates Hillary," by POLITICO's Michael Crowley and Julia Ioffe: "When mass protests against Russian President Vladimir Putin erupted in Moscow in December 2011, Putin made clear who he thought was really behind them: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. ... Five years later, Putin may be seeking revenge against Clinton. At least that's the implication of the view among some cybersecurity experts that Russia was behind the recent hack of the Democratic National Committee's email server, which has sowed confusion and dissent at the Democratic National Convention and undercut Clinton's goal of party unity." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=5a090bf305f509aa81aa9ff6f698ab007a2060ef6056dd4ce9f533e84baabf2f - BIGGEST LOSER - PPP poll found that after his RNC convention speech, Texas Sen.
