Dear Friend, The Truman Project advocacy team has been hard at work, and we wanted to share with you some of our recent successes. From sponsoring our first piece of legislation to collecting over 10,000 signatures in favor of wind energy to biking across the country, it's been a busy couple of months! Our efforts attracted media attention, gaining Truman some excellent press. OPERATION FREE Truman’s energy security campaign, Operation Free, is committed to ending our dependence on oil and defending the military’s investments in clean and renewable energy. Veterans and national security experts across the country are organizing events, testifying before state legislatures, and are in the media talking about the national security implications of our energy posture. Below are some recent events our Operation Free team has held. EVENTS Wind Production Tax Credit On May 15th, Operation Free delivered 10,000 signatures to Congressional leaders in favor of the Wind Production Tax Credit. Operation Free Veteran Chris Marzoni sent out this video on our behalf. DoD Defense On May 21st, Brett Hunt, Operation Free Veteran, increased Operation Free’s online presence, a key component of the campaign’s strategy. Sending out videos on starring veterans and other members of our Op Free community has proven to be incredibly effective EPA GHG Rule On May 24th, Operation Free sent five veterans to testify at EPA hearings in Chicago and Washington DC to support the recent greenhouse gas rule on new coal power plants. The DoD and CIA have both said climate change poses a serious threat to our national security and the operational readiness of our military. Our Operation Free events garnered substantial media attention for Truman and its energy security campaign, a few exciting stories are below. MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS 5/23/12, Biofuels Digest Chief of Naval Operations joins chorus of lawmakers, generals, admirals calling for US biofuels focus by Jim Lane Operation Free Veteran John G. Castellaw and ranking House Armed Service Committee member Congressman Adam Smith team up to defend the military’s investments in advanced biofuels. 5/23/12, Clean Energy Direct ‘Operation Free’ Urges Senate To Reject Biofuels Prohibitions In House Defense Bill by Eric Lindeman Nine retired Operation Free Admirals and Generals sent a letter to both the House and Senate Armed Services Committee demanding that the committee stop putting partisan politics before good policy. 5/29/12, KGNU Radio How On Earth with Guest Rachel Kleinfeld, Truman CEO Truman co-founder and CEO Rachel Kleinfeld discussed her new book Let There Be Light and how renewable energy sources like Solar and Wind can help stabilize developing nations. 5/29/12, Agritalk Radio Operation Free: Fighting for Military Use of Biofuels with Guest Mike Breen, Truman VP Truman Vice President and Operation Free Veteran Mike Breen discusses the need for Congress to either get on board or get out of the way when it comes to the military’s investments in clean alternative energy. 5/31/12, C-SPAN House Floor Speech during Amendment Debate by Rep. Earl Blumenauer Congressman Earl Blumenauer quotes Truman Vice President Mike Breen and Operation Free during his floor speech in the House of Representatives. In addition to Operation Free, Truman is also working hard on Make US Strong, our campaign promoting international development as a means to increase national security. MAKE US STRONG The Truman Project has long believed that in order to face 21st century threats, we must have a comprehensive national security strategy. A comprehensive approach includes supporting international development programs in order to prevent future security threats. Make US Strong is a campaign that supports full funding for the United States' ‘150 account,’ which funds the entire USAID program. In an era of globalization, a stable world means a more secure America. EVENTS 05/04/2012, Cycle For Security Grand Finale! Truman Partner Janessa Goldbeck finished her 4,200 mile bike tour from San Diego, to Tallahassee, all the way back to Washington, D.C., in style. With the support of hundreds of our Fellows, Partners, and VLA members, Janessa rode into D.C. to give her pitch for international development and foreign aid one last time. The event featured Paul O’Brien, Vice President for Policy and Campaigns for Oxfam America. 05/14/1012, Capitol Hill Visits After finishing Cycle for Security, Janessa began visiting members of Congress in Washington D.C. to tell them about her journey across the South. The stories she heard on the road are helping change the minds of those who oppose investing in foreign aid and development. Watch Janessa’s video as she continues the fight! Thank you for your continued support of our work. I urge you to make a donation to the Truman Project today so we can continue the fight for a strong, smart, and principled national security strategy.
