Truman National Security Project ! In honor of the end of the year, we wanted to highlight the successes of the Truman community throughout 2017. Truman fought against the Trump Administration’s assaults on our values, and held convenings, trainings, and major events with our allies across the country. We are thankful for your support throughout 2017, and we look forward to continuing to work together in 2018 and beyond!


As we close out the year, we wanted to take a moment to recognize the extraordinary contributions and legacy of the late John Freidenrich, Truman Center for National Policy's former Board Chair, who passed away in October. Aside from being a stalwart supporter of Truman's work and a true believer in our mission, Mr. Freidenrich was a mentor and friend to many in our community. Our thoughts are with his wife Jill and the rest of the Freidenrich family this holiday season, and we extend to them our deepest condolences—along with our most sincere gratitude for sharing such a remarkable leader with our community.


Asha Castleberry

Asha Castleberry is an adjunct faculty professor at Fordham University. She teaches U.S. foreign policy, international politics, and United Nation peace operations. She also teaches U.S. foreign policy at Baruch College. A U.S. Army veteran, Castleberry recently completed a 30-month deployment in the Middle East. Since the 2014 ISIL incursion in Iraq, she served for Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq and Kuwait. From December 2012 to June 2014, Castleberry served as the Kuwait Desk Officer for International Military Affairs, U.S. Army Central. During the Obama Administration, she worked with the U.S. Mission to the United Nations at the State Department. Castleberry also has extensive experiences in Latin America. She was an election observer for the 2009
presidential election in El Salvador and worked on USSOUTHCOM's peacekeeping operations in Nicaragua. Castleberry is also a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves.


Recently, Castleberry joined as a Board Member for Women of Color Advancing Peace and Security (WCAPS), led by former U.S. Ambassador to Nuclear Arms Reduction, Dr. Bonnie Jenkins. The purpose of the organization is to recognize women of color in national security. On 06 December 2017, WCAPS successfully hosted their first event at Truman National Security Project’s office in Washington, DC.

Truman Communications and Advocacy Work
Throughout this past year, the Truman community sprang into action when our values were challenged. After President Trump signed the executive order that banned refugees and members of seven Muslim-majority nations from the United States at the end of January, the Truman community got to work. Members

published more than 20 op-eds in a dozen states and nationally in the days after the announcement, and our message guidance helped shape the debate by emphasizing the intensity of the refugee vetting process and the risk that the ban poses to our national security. Truman members also organized a letter signed by more than 300 veterans against the ban, briefed staffers on Capitol Hill, and held local press events and released statements across the nation. In June and July, the community reacted similarly in response to President Trump’s decisions to withdraw from the Paris Agreement and ban transgender Americans from the military. Truman Salons in San Diego, New York, and Chicago


In February 2017, the San Diego Chapter organized their first-ever salonat the home of former San Diego Port Commissioner Laurie Black and her partner Stephen Skinner. The gathering,

covered by The San Diego Union Tribune, brought together military, intelligence, law-enforcement, political, and scientific leaders in the national security community to discuss Russian hacking, cybersecurity, and the increasing importance of the United States’ policy towards Asia. Similarly, in April and October, Truman National Security Project Board Member Anne Wedner hosted a salon at her home in Chicago. These salons centered on topics such as the U.S. relationship with NATO and Russia, and North Korea. Attendees included Truman President and CEO Michael Breen, members of the Chicago Chapter, and community members. Long time Truman supporter, Mitch Draizin, also held a salon in June at his home in New York City. This gathering brought together new and current Truman supporters
(including new Truman board member Steve Israel) to discuss lessons learned from the 2016 elections, the Russia investigation, continued tensions with North Korea, and the efforts by Truman members nationwide to counter the current administration. And finally, in September, the San Diego Chapter hosted another salon, entitled White Nationalism: History, Current State, and the Path Forward. This discussion drew local community organizers, FBI special agents, and visitors from the United Kingdom—including former right-wing nationalists—to discuss nationalist and populist parties in Europe and the United States. TruCon17: Send Your Mission


From 23-25 June, Truman Center and Truman Project hosted our annual conference, TruCon17: Send Your Mission, in Washington, DC. Highlights included Ambassador Wendy Sherman, who was a driving force in negotiating the P5+1’s nuclear agreement with Tehran, joining us for a wide-ranging conversation on foreign policy , and Congressman Adam Schiff, who both delivered remarks and held a conversation with Truman Center Board Member Greg Craig on the ongoing investigation of the Trump campaign’s relationship with Vladimir Putin’s Russia. Attendees also heard from a diverse slate of four members of the Truman community—Fellow Anka Lee, Partner Anastasia Kessler-Dellaccio, Fellow Sherry Hakimi, and member of the Defense Council Jason Cain—who shared their
“stories of self,” discussing their unique paths and work through Truman on the issues close to their hearts. Once again, we want to thank all of our sponsors who made this event possible, including Robert J. Truman Trainings in Georgia, Texas, and Washington, DC

Throughout the year, the Truman community shared their expertise with partners and allied organizations across the country by way of our Truman trainings and briefings. Our staff presented on topics including Military 101, Energy and Climate Security 101, Strategic Communications, and more to audiences from state legislators in North Carolina to political activists in Texas and women elected officials in DC to a nationwide gathering of progressives at Netroots Nation 2017. In November, three Truman staff also conducted the Strategic Communications training for almost 300 Professional Fellows from 44 countries at the American Council of Young Political Leaders’ Fall Congress, held in partnership with U.S. State Department Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Following that
training, more than 15 Truman members and staff were on hand to provide coaching and give feedback to the Fellows as they presenting their project ideas.

celebrating leadership in public service, policy, and national security. We were pleased to present The Edmund S. Muskie Distinguished Public Service Award to The Honorable Ray Mabus for his distinguished career in the public sector; during his tenure as Secretary of the Navy and Marine Corps, Mabus worked tirelessly to increase the energy security of the Navy and Marine Corps, open ranks to women and the LGBTQ community, and strengthen global partnerships. We also honored Melanie Nakagawa with the Policy Leadership Award for her influential work on climate change and national security at the Department of State, as well as Nat Kreamer with the Visionary Leadership Award for his efforts to increase domestic renewable energy and create jobs in the clean energy industry for veterans.
