Dear Robert,

Last night’s victory in Alabama was personal for me.

I’m from there. I used to work for Senator Richard Shelby when both Senate seats were held by Democrats, and my mom still lives in Alabama’s Black Belt.

The victory gives me hope, not just for Virginia, but for other southern states that have been under the grip of extremist bigots like Roy Moore for too long.

Senator-elect Doug Jones is not only a champion of justice, he ran an inclusive campaign that spoke to the needs of his constituents—not the politics of Bannon or Trump. They had the resources and used them wisely, turning out the vote and building momentum every week.

We proved in Virginia’s last election we can do the same—but our work is not done. We have ongoing recounts we have to fight out.
