Monthly Newsletter from JVC Northwest with news, updates, resources, & job opportunities. Mike Benton passed away on last week after being in hospice for a short time at home. Mike inspired 25 years of JVs at Orientation with his songs and wisdom each morning, accompanying musicians and singers throughout the week in preparation for the Missioning Liturgy. He was such a joy and uplifting presence – down to earth, funny, and insightful. He attended Orientation twice on kidney dialysis. He suffered other illnesses as well but never complained, taking all in stride. We wrapped him a healing quilt made by current staff member Martha McElligott at the Missioning Liturgy in 2013 – he continued to come back until his last Orientation in 2016. Message from the Executive Director This Advent we prepare for the rebirth of Emmanuel in our hearts. We remember Jesus’ birth in a humble manger, in poverty, away from Mary and Joseph’s home in Nazareth because of the need to obey Roman dictates of enrollment in the empire. After Jesus’ birth, the family must flee to Egypt, refugees in fear of acts from a tyrannical leader threatening Jesus’ life. Our very Christian roots in this story call on us to welcome those in need and those who come to our land seeking safety and a new life – the Dreamers, the refugees, immigrants seeking safety and a new life. One Jesuit ministry, the Ignatian Solidary Network, provides ways for members of the Ignatian family to engage their faith in action. Connect with our new staff members: Outreach and Events Coordinator Taylor Ciambra and Alumni Coordinator Anthony DeLorenzo! Taylor Ciambra served as a JV with Brave Heart Volunteers in Sitka, AK in 2014-15 and is originally from New Haven, Connecticut. As the Outreach and Events Coordinator, Taylor is helping former JVs in the five Northwest states stay connected with JVC Northwest. Taylor will work with alumni councils in Seattle and Portland to create fun and meaningful opportunities for connection as well as coordinating larger events for our growing community, like our May Seattle Event. As the new Alumni Coordinator, Anthony DeLorenzo (Newark, NJ ’08-09 and Portland, OR ’09-10) works with former JVs currently living outside the Northwest. Along with supporting alumni to build networks in their own cities, he will coordinate the Ruined Readers Book Club and the JV/FJV Mentoring Program. This is Anthony’s second time on the JVC Northwest staff, previously filling the role as one of the Program Coordinators in the Cascade Retreat Region from 2010-13. JVC Northwest welcomes our new Tacoma JV EnCorps Community! With the volunteer leadership of the Tacoma JV EnCorps Program Lead Colleen Mulligan, and the Core Team, we have established our sixth JV EnCorps community in Tacoma, Wash. The community has launched with 19 JV EnCorps members and has already had a successful inaugural opening retreat. We are very grateful for the support of St. Leo Parish, Bellarmine Preparatory School, and the larger Tacoma community! Crossroads Call Send in your FJV Updates! We are preparing for the Spring 2018 edition of our biannual newsletter, Focus, and are asking former JVs to send in their news for Crossroads, the alumni updates section of the newsletter! This info can include weddings, births, adoptions, awards, promotions, milestones, community reunions, etc. Send in your 2-3 sentence blurb and include a picture if possible, to Taylor by January 19, 2018. Who should be the next JV? Encourage friends and family to apply! Know someone who’d be a great JV? Interested applicants can fill out this Online Interest Form to learn more; send the link to anyone who you think is a great candidate to be “ruined for life.” The application is now live and February 12 is the Priority Deadline. Save the Date: 2018 Seattle Gathering and Fundraiser May 20th, 2018, Seattle University This year's annual fundraising gathering will continue the theme of “Extending the Table” from Orientation. A morning mass and brunch will be included in the program as well. All from the JVC Northwest community are invited to attend. Catholic Volunteer Network Discernment Retreats Catholic Volunteer Network now hosts discernment retreats for current volunteers and alumni who are contemplating their next steps. Join CVN for a weekend retreat and enjoy the opportunity to get away from the busyness of life and join with others in the spirit of discernment. These retreats are made available free of charge thanks to the support of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. Travel stipends are also available.
