Classes~Workshops~FREE Wellness Happy Hours! December 2017 Wellness Tips for Navigating the Holiday Season Enjoying the camaraderie and community found in holiday events is an easy and fun way to commit to self-care! Here are some time-honored neighborhood activities to add light and joy to the season. Eat! As the chill takes hold, be sure to stop by a nearby Farmer’s Market (Wed 4-7 in CoHi; Sat 9-1 in MtP) and get some fresh, end-of-season treasures. Lately we've been creating with kabocha squash (Japanese pumpkin) available at Progreso Internacional Market on MtP Street. Meaty and flavorful like a hubbard, soft edible skin like a delicata, the kabocha is versatile and satisfying. Slice and roast with olive oil and salt; ladle lentil soup over roasted kabocha; adorn kabocha atop a kale salad; blend a kabocha souflee - sweet or savory! Drink! Stay healthy with antioxidants - elderberry juice is the delicious way to keep colds and flu at bay. North Carolina farmer Norm Lenhardt of Norm's Farm brews amazing elixirs with elderberry flowers and fruit. Drop by The Well for a taste of elderberry extract, elderberry wellness syrup, or elderflower ginger syrup. We'll be serving elderberry elixirs at our Yoga Book Club. Be merry! For some local flavor, here are a few holiday options: Zoo Lights is back at the National Zoo until Jan. 1; enjoy a spectacular HALF A MILLION LED lights while you sip on hot cider. The Petworth Arts Collaborative is hosting on Sat.Dec. 9 the Upshur Street Arts and Crafts Fair, featuring a “Most Creative Gingerbread House” contest. Get to baking and tweet a pic of your masterpiece to #gingerbreadhouseDC (before midnight on 12/7) to win a $50 gift certificate! Or simply head to the Craft Fair and build one on the spot. On Sun. Dec. 10 at 5:00 pm, head to the Garage Sessions: A Special Mt. Pleasant Holiday Show featuring the Mt.P Christmas Chorus and other local bands. Hosted by Frankojazz's Frank Agbro and held outdoors at the Mt. P Auto Repair (3054 Mt Pleasant St NW), this is sure to be an eclectic musical celebration. Want more Christmas caroling? The MtP Christmas Chorus, led by Tara Macreadie and Paul Ruderman, are performing throughout the season at several iconic MtP venues, including Haydee's on 12/14 and Marx Cafe on 12/17. Stressed about gift giving? The Well offers gift certificates - buy on line, call or drop by for assistance. Give the gift of wellness while supporting local businesses and residents. Buy a Gift Certificate Staff Highlight: Dora Shick Advanced Practitioner Dora Schick graduated from Potomac Massage Training Institute in 2014 and is currently enrolled in a 700-hour training to become a Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist. Dora sees a wide range of clients, but as a dancer with DancEthos, she’s particularly attuned to the needs of dancers, athletes, yoga instructors, and others whose avocations put hard demands on their bodies. Dora works with her clients to address their specific areas of pain and tension, while also reducing stress and anxiety. In describing her approach to bodywork and wellness, Dora says: “My work combines deep tissue, myofascial and Swedish techniques for the purpose of relieving immediate discomfort and pain. I work with my clients to support their personal wellness goals, whether it's recovering from an injury, relieving chronic or acute pain, or simply creating more space for self-care.” What Dora finds most rewarding is how changes can take effect in a short amount of time. “It's amazing to watch someone come in with aches and pains and leave an hour later feeling considerably better,” says Dora. “Helping people feel more comfortable and at ease in their bodies is something I love about this work. I also appreciate that it's not always easy to make time for yourself. It's no small thing to prioritize your own well-being. When you fit massage into your schedule, you're doing something healthy for you. Everyone is on their own path in figuring out how to manage stress and feel their best. It's an honor for me to play a role in helping people care for themselves through massage.” Find Dora@The Well on Mondays 2pm-8pm, Thursdays 10am-7pm, Fridays 1pm-7pm and Saturdays 10am-5pm. Book now with Dora $ FSA $: Use it or lose it! Your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) funds run out on December 31, 2017. Most FSAs and HSAs cover therapeutic massage. If you have any remaining FSA funds, make an appointment today at The Well. We'll provide a detailed receipt to submit to your FSA and/or health insurance provider. And for 2018, be sure to max out on your FSA contributions and make massage a part of your self-care.
