Honoring Labor Day 2017: Workers Keep on Marching

Similar to our predecessors 135 years ago, Labor Day 2017 saw citizens in cities
nationwide take to the streets to rally for worker rights. Today's issues include
higher wages and paid sick time allowing employees the freedom to not have to live
paycheck-to-paycheck or decide between rent and food for their families.
Heartland Capital Strategies and our sponsors work to encourage labor's financial

Why Millennials Should Lead the Next Labor Movement

I grew up in a household that neatly displayed its affiliations in the bathroom
magazine rack. There were copies of Ebony, Essence and Jet that my dad brought home
from work so that we could be in touch with our blackness in magazine form, and
the union newsletters that explained why his job was worth having.
He worked on the assembly line at a car plant in southern Wisconsin, work that regularly
sent him to the hospital for surgeries to drain extra fluid from his knees. But
those procedures were covered by union-negotiated medical insurance, and the time
he had to miss work for them was handled by union-negotiated contractual provisions.
Each time he healed, he could go right back to the job he loved in order to provide
for our family. Pope Francis' Union Message

Pope Francis delivered an address to the Confederation of Trade Unions in Italy
(CISL), and his message is a compelling one. It can be read in its entirety here.
For me, there were at least four important points.
1. We should not think about labor without understanding, and having due regard
for, the human being that labors. Here, Francis is expressing three interconnected
ideas. The first is one of the central organizing principles of the labor movement:
labor is not a commodity, and when it is treated as a commodity, enormous social
harm follows. The second, highly relevant as we think about the future of work
and the potential for technological unemployment, is that human flourishing requires
meaningful work. The third, though, also critical to our thinking about the future,
is that work cannot entirely define human life, and "rest" is also critical. The

and talk about labour without the person, labour ends up becoming something inhumane,

These are dark times for labor. The Republican majority that now controls all levels
of the federal government has made it clear that they plan on rolling back labor
and employment protections, while also not funding and enforcing the currently

the power and reach of organized labor is at historic lows.

of workers in America are members of a union, including 6.4 percent of private sector
workers and 34.4 percent of public sector workers. The dramatic drop in union representation
since the 1950s, when over a third of the workforce was unionized, has resulted
in stunning income inequality, wage stagnation, continued wage discrimination against
women, tens of millions of Americans working for sub-poverty-level wages, and widespread
gaps in basic health, retirement, and family leave benefits.
Traditionally, the courts have not been kind to labor. From the very beginning of
our nation's history, the earliest union efforts were treated by conservative jurists
as criminal conspiracies and interferences with employers' property and contract
rights and with Congress' responsibility to regulate interstate commerce. Unions
spent the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries decrying "judge-made law" and
seeking, essentially, to get the government and courts out of labor disputes.
