Tom Croft to Open the Century Foundation "Manufacturing a Better Paying Pennsylvania"
Summit as part an initiative to restore good-paying productive jobs as a central
strategy to rebuild communities throughout the industrial heartland.
Heartland and SVA Director Tom Croft will open Manufacturing a Better Paying Pennsylvania,
a half-day summit in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, October 17, that will bring together
local and national leaders committed to renewing manufacturing, reinvesting in
manufacturing cities and spurring economic development in the Keystone State.
The Summit will commence at 8:30 a.m. at the Steelworkers headquarters (60 Boulevard
of the Allies, downtown Pittsburgh). This event is part of the "High-Wage America
Project," a policy and research program led by The Century Foundation's Bernard
L. Schwartz Rediscovering Government Initiative. A number of new policy papers will
be released including one co-authored by Tom on rebuilding manufacturing cities.
Breakfast and lunch will be included.
This participatory summit, which will feature an address by United Steelworkers
President Leo Gerard, will discuss how to bring back good jobs for all working families.
Two panels, featuring leaders from government, business, workforce and community
development, and labor, will lay the groundwork for a bold agenda to build an advanced
and inclusive manufacturing economy-showcasing examples of economic growth already
underway in Pennsylvania and similar communities across the country.

Futures of Work Conference in Chicago!

Tom Croft and Annie Malhotra, co-authors of the Responsible Investor Handbook, have
completed a paper for an upcoming conference called "The Many Futures of Work: Possibilities
& Perils" which will be held October 5-6, 2017 at the Northwestern Memorial Medical
Center in Chicago.
Organized by our friend Peter Creticos, Director of the Institute for Work and the
Economy, the conference is an exploration of the loss of middle income jobs and
the changing nature of how we work. The conference is designed to crowd-source real
solutions that grow the middle, promote innovation, and tear-down barriers to economic
security. The confab's aim is to brighten many pathways to the future by providing
a venue for enlightened thinking by businesses, unions, governments, foundations,
workforce and education institutions, and grassroots and community organizations.
The ideas from this conference will inform conversations and decisions at all levels
and places.

For two decades, Heartland has been saying that the owners of workers' capital-the
workers and beneficiaries-must prevent the misuse of their hard-earned retirement
savings and other assets by irrational Wall Street schemes that would harm them.
In "Working Capital: The Power of Labor's Capital (2001), we called that process
"collateral damage" (a corollary of collateral benefits, wherein the DOL has long
allowed investments in ways that benefit people, with various caveats).
In the Responsible Investor Handbook, we called for stronger actions by workers
as shareholders to invest responsibly and protect the beneficiaries of institutional
investment. In this paper, we call for specific actions by workers as both shareholders
and stakeholders who, after all, are crucial to the success of any enterprise.
All are calls to make the "boss" more accountable.

In September 2017, Adam Blumenthal, a member of the Yale SOM Class of 1989 and the
founder and managing partner of the private equity firm Blue Wolf Capital Partners,
received the 2017 Civic Champion Award from City Limits, a New York City-focused
nonprofit investigative journalism news agency. The award recognized his work making
investments that preserve union workplaces and promote economic development. We
talked to Blumenthal about a career creating value for a range of stakeholders.
What is value? Can it be found in the pluses and minuses on a balance sheet? Or
does it require a broader measure?
Adam Blumenthal has asked this question throughout a career that has led him from
work as a community organizer to founding a private equity firm. "Value is an interesting
concept," he says. "Obviously, it can mean market value. But I don't think that
participating in a market and creating value are the same thing."
Blumenthal currently runs Blue Wolf Capital Partners LLC, a private equity firm
that specializes in finding creative solutions for intractable problems. In this
context, he says, "We think that value creation has to do with managing people
better, in having a better strategy, getting and delivering a service at a higher
quality for lower costs. Those things deliver better outcomes to people with less
resources and less effort. That's at the heart of value."
