President Donald Trump asked his national security adviser Michael Flynn to resign because of his "evolving and eroding level of trust" in him, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Tuesday.

Flynn, a retired general, resigned on Monday night, after just 24 days in the job, following reports that he had improperly discussed Obama administration-issued sanctions on Russia with the country's ambassador before Trump's inauguration and misled Vice President Mike Pence about it.

"We got to a point not based on a legal issue, but based on a trust issue with a level of trust between the president and General Flynn had eroded to the point where he felt he had to make a change," Spicer said. "The president was very concerned that General Flynn had misled the vice president and others."

"The evolving and eroding level of trust as a result of this situation in a series of other questionable instances is what led the president to ask for General Flynn's resignation," he added.
