Dear Hunter -
I hope this finds you well and that you had a wonderful Valentine's Day.
I wanted to follow-up with the latest on Cheryl and her situation with USSS (see revised summary attached). Given the news of Clancy today, I thought it was a good time to brief you. By the way, I heard from my sources yesterday that not only was Clancy leaving, they are planning to remove up to 25 of the *top* agents at HQ.
While we were in DC two weeks ago, we met with two members of the Majority Counsel of the Oversight Committee (Valerie Shen of the Minority staff was planning to attend but had to cancel at the last minute) - they were receptive, and even apologetic to Cheryl for what she had been through. I am told that last Monday, the 6th of February, they had "very senior" members of the USSS meet with Chairman Chaffetz - who brought up Cheryl's case specifically to them. We have not heard back from them since then.
You may know that I worked for Carolyn Maloney for two years from 2001-2003 - I am still in contact with her and her staff and they have been instrumental in all of this - very looped in on all of what is happening. Carolyn, like your Dad, is a women's rights advocate to her core, and is just as outraged that they are retaliating against Cheryl and what kind of chilling message it will send to women across the country if the USSS gets away with "silencing" someone who spoke out.
In addition, (Cheryl doesn't really know the extent of this as I purposely kept her in the dark) I met in person with Carol Leonnig from the WP. She is the reporter who initially reported the story of Xavier attacking Cheryl. It was important to me that she see me and hear directly from me how much this has impacted our life. I told her how many times Cheryl has literally broken down in tears and told me that she should have never reported her attack - Cheryl knew that they would come after her - yet I begged her and told her that it was important she do this for the next woman, who wouldn't be as trained and skilled to fight him off.
On a personal note, I wanted to let you know that I have been working for the LBJ School of Public Affairs at UT Austin for the past year and half. Yes, Cheryl has made me bleed burnt orange. :) Regardless, we think of Maisy often and not sure if she still plays basketball but we would love to have y'all here in Austin for dare I say a college visit? I know the Athletics Department folks really well and we'd love to roll out the red carpet if you ever come. It goes without saying that you would have a place to stay with us - we have plenty of room at Casa Dunn, and the door is always open for you, Kathleen, Haley, Naomi, Finnegan, Maisy, Hunter, Natalie....... just let us know!
