By Elena Schneider | 02/07/2017 10:00 AM EDT The following newsletter is an abridged version of Campaign Pro's Morning Score. For an earlier morning read on exponentially more races - and for a more comprehensive aggregation of the day's most important campaign news - sign up for Campaign Pro today. (http://www.politicopro.com/proinfo) CASH RACE - NRCC raises in $10 million in January: The NRCC had its biggest January haul ever, topping its record of $7 million in January 2003, per a memo from the group. The committee brought in $4.4 million in 2013, the most recent off-year, midterm fundraising. "Our strong fundraising numbers reflect the enthusiasm behind our agenda after a historic election," said NRCC Chairman Rep. Steve Stivers in a statement. "People are energized to see real change in Washington and recognize that Republican control of the House is vital to moving our country forward." Over one-third of the money came via transfers from Speaker Paul Ryan. - "Democrat Tom Perriello says he raised $1.1 million a month into Va. governor campaign," The Washington Post's Fenit Nirappil: "Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Perriello has raised more than $1.1 million in the month since he entered the race, his campaign announced Monday. Analysts say it is an early sign that the former congressman is capable of mounting a serious primary challenge to Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, who declared his candidacy two years ago and had won backing from nearly every top elected Democrat before Perriello made his surprise entry into the race on Jan. 5. Perriello campaign officials declined to detail the sources of contributions, beyond saying they include 2,500 online donations. Virginia does not cap campaign giving, meaning fundraising totals can be skewed by six-figure checks." Full story. - "Democrats Are Desperate for Bernie Sanders' Email List," by Mother Jones' Timothy Murphy: "Democrats have made no secret they covet Sanders' list, which Sanders controls through his Senate campaign and the political nonprofit he founded, Our Revolution. The decision on what to do with it rests with Sanders. ... But former Sanders staffers and consultants scoff at the demand for the list. The way they see it, clamoring for access misses the point. The list wasn't the campaign's secret weapon; Sanders was. 'They keep thinking it's the list,' says Becky Bond, who as a senior adviser to Sanders helped build the candidate's national organizing operation. 'It's so crazy. It's like someone who buys a $12,000 bicycle and thinks they can win the Tour de France.'" Full story. WATCH THIS SPACE - "Upstate strike an early test for Trump's economic agenda," by POLITICO New York's Jimmy Vielkind: "An early test is taking shape for President Donald Trump at a chemical plant on the banks of the Hudson River: Will he weigh in for the striking workers who helped vote him into office, or the executives who seem to have his ear? The Republican president may have provided a clue Friday, when he huddled with a collection of CEOs at the White House in an advisory council chaired by Steve Schwarzman, head of the private equity giant Blackstone. At the very same time, dozens of workers picketed in a freezing wind outside the Momentive Performance Materials plant for the ninety-fourth consecutive day. They talked about the latest round of givebacks demanded by the hedge fund managers who bought the plant when General Electric spun it off in 2006. It's a group of managers that, until recently, included Schwarzman." - "Many of the workers talked about why they voted for Trump, and said they hoped he would be true to the values of his campaign. 'He's going to know we're here, and what we're fighting is corporate greed,' said Ed Halse, 56, who has worked at the plant for 27 years. 'I like everything he says. I just hope he does something.'" Full story. CALIFORNIA DREAMING - Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel is not running for governor: The PayPal co-founder and vocal supporter of President Trump told The Los Angeles Times through a spokesman that he's "not running for governor." Democrats Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, state Treasurer John Chiang and former state Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin are already running, while former Los Angeles Rams player Rosey Grier is the only well-known Republican in the race. - "Republican John Cox, a San Diego County businessman and investor, is exploring a run for governor in 2018, seeding his bid with a $1 million personal contribution," The Sacramento Bee reported. MORE ON THE MONEY - "FEC chart: Baselines for battleground House members," by Campaign Pro's Scott Bland: "Most battleground House members start from scratch on the campaign finance front this year, after spending down campaign cash defending their districts in 2016. The median member in the 56 House districts included in the first edition of the Cook Political Report's 2018 House ratings has just over $100,000 in the bank. Full story. FIRST IN SCORE - CLF attacks DCCC's March Into '18: House Republicans' flagship outside group is going after House Democrats with sites that use the DCCC's campaign slogan as the URL, including MarchInto2018.com, MarchInto18.com, MarchInto2018.org, and MarchInto18.org. The sites are launching the same week as the Democratic members' retreat. "Eight years ago Democrats were hailed as the tech-savvy party of the future, but now House Democrats can't even get a simple website up and running and their plan to win back the Majority is just as sad," said Corry Bliss, CLF Executive Director, in a statement. "Whether it's botched rollouts or failed policies, Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats continue to march into irrelevance." COMING SOON? - "Healey-for-governor chatter ramps up, fueled by Trump fallout," by POLITICO Massachusetts' Lauren Dezenski: "The Massachusetts Democrat getting the most buzz as a potential 2018 challenger to Republican Gov. Charlie Baker is the one who, for now, isn't running: state Attorney General Maura Healey. A relative political unknown just two years ago, the 45-year-old New Hampshire native's stock has been steadily rising among Democratic activists, particularly in the wake of Donald Trump's ascent to the White House and the Jan. 21 Women's March, where Healey told Trump, 'I'll see you in court.' She followed through on that promise for the fourth time last week, when Massachusetts joined a lawsuit over Trump's executive order on refugees." Full story. THE PIPELINE - "EMILY's List begins 'most aggressive' female recruitment effort," by USA Today's Heidi M. Przybyla: "The political action committee that elevates pro-choice Democratic women is doubling its staff dedicated to recruiting and training them to run for office, ranging from Congress to city council and school board ...Their Run to Win effort includes a new online portal where women can learn about how to run for office and leverage its 5-million-person network to match with local volunteers interested in making phone calls, hosting house parties or just asking other women they know to run." Full story. - "The Democratic Party is basically on life support in these 10 states," The Washington Post's Aaron Blake: "Across the 49 state Senates in the United States, 20 are at least two-thirds Republican, and eight of those 20 are more than 80 percent GOP. Such is the dominance of the Republican Party in state legislatures. President Trump's popular-vote-losing win and the GOP's congressional majorities are huge for the party - don't get me wrong - but they actually undersell the GOP's unprecedented dominance at the state level. As previously noted, the GOP has complete control over about half the states in the union, while Democrats have only a handful. But not all those GOP-dominated states are equally dominated. In some of them, the dominance is so complete that the Democratic Party barely has a pulse. And some of the states on this list might actually surprise you." Full story. ADMINISTRATION SPEED READ - "Trump's White House tries to rehab its Hill outreach," by POLITICO's Josh Dawsey, Shane Goldmacher, Eli Stokols and Matthew Nussbaum: "Kellyanne Conway, one of President Donald Trump's most prominent aides, trekked to Capitol Hill Monday morning on a diplomatic mission - to reassure the 100 or so Senate GOP communications staffers that Trump has no intention of acting unilaterally with a pen and a phone, while neglecting Congress. Instead, a number of aides were left wondering if the White House is truly hearing their concerns. After touting last week's smooth rollout of Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, Conway faced questions about the tens of thousands of calls and emails that GOP senators have received about education secretary nominee Betsy DeVos, according to three sources who attended the meeting. The sources said Conway and Boris Epshteyn, who leads Trump's surrogate operation and also attended the meeting, appeared dismissive of their worries and struggled to give satisfactory answers." Full story. - "Corporate America tackles Trump," by POLITICO's Ben White and Tony Romm: "The resistance to President Donald Trump's agenda is spreading fast across corporate America. Technology giants like Google and Facebook are leading the movement. But more traditional American brands like Budweiser, Coca-Cola and 84 Lumber used the Super Bowl, watched by more than 100 million people, to brand themselves in sharp contrast to Trump's nationalist agenda on immigration and trade. An early calculus is developing around American board rooms from Silicon Valley to the heartland to New York: While taking on Trump risks sparking anger from an irascible and highly voluble president, staying quiet and potentially alienating customers and employees could be much worse in the long run." Full story. - "Justice Department Urges Appeals Court to Reinstate Trump's Travel Ban," by The New York Times' Adam Liptak: "The Justice Department on Monday evening urged a federal appeals court to reinstate President Trump's targeted travel ban, saying immediate action was needed to ensure the nation's safety. The administration's brief was the last in a series of urgent pleas to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, in San Francisco, which is now set to rule on the most ambitious and disruptive initiative of Mr. Trump's young presidency. The ruling will almost certainly be followed by an appeal to the Supreme Court. The court scheduled an hourlong oral argument in the case for Tuesday afternoon. That gives at least another day of reprieve to foreign visitors from seven predominantly Muslim countries, as well as other immigrants, who initially were blocked from entering the United States by Mr. Trump's order."
