Let's be clear: Elections have consequences, and President Trump has the right to nominate Cabinet officials who align with his values. However, many of his nominees have public records that run counter to the core missions of the agencies they could soon take over, as well as to the core values of our country.

Sen. Jeff Sessions is one such nominee. I have served alongside him for six years. I paid close attention to his testimony and asked him tough questions when he appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee. I find his track record on civil rights, civil liberties, immigration and torture - to name just a few areas - unacceptable for an attorney general of the United States.

As the battle for equality rages on in America, Sen. Sessions has vigorously opposed many bipartisan reform efforts to ensure rights and protections for all Americans. I believe strongly that the attorney general of the United States cannot simply watch the march of history pass him by - nor, worse yet, actively work against it.

That is why, after carefully considering and reviewing his 40 years of public service, I voted against Sen. Sessions' confirmation in the Judiciary Committee and will vote against him again on the Senate floor. Now, I need your help to urge my colleagues to do the same:

Thank you for speaking out. It is my hope that at the end of this, we'll have a Trump administration that is broadly representative of our country and filled with leaders with the strengths and skills to do the job well.
