As summer comes to an end and fall approaches, C_TEC will end this year strong with the help of my colleagues as well as with the support of all of you. Next week we will be on the Hill for a staff briefing on Automated Vehicles. The event is October 2 from 11:30 to 12:30 in 253 Russell Senate Office Building–lunch will be provided. Please join us as we discuss the safety benefits of automated vehicles. C_TEC is also looking forward to hosting an event in Memphis on October 18, where we will discuss the Age of Disruption. If you have a presence in Memphis please join us. Going forward this year, data privacy will remain a priority this year and 2019. I’d like to take a moment to thank you all for your efforts and dedication to helping us draft the privacy principles. We have been meeting with both Senate and House Republicans and Democrats about our principles and sharing our goals for model legislation. I will keep you updated on the next steps. Chamber, unveiled its ten privacy principles (https://t.e2ma.net/click/3vyvqd/r2f0ql/zs5vrr). C_TEC continues to engage with both Republican and Democratic Hill staff, the administration and other stakeholders to develop a federal privacy law. On September 7th, C_TEC along with the Chamber’s Antitrust Council hosted a listening session of FTC staff to discuss the ongoing competition and consumer protection hearings. On September 12th, C_TEC hosted an Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) working group call. On the call we discussed an association letter to the Senate Commerce Committee and House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee in support of a proposal to improve the applications from “fixed site facilities” established in Section 2209 of the FAA Extension, Safety, and Security Act of 2016 (P.L. 114-190), which C_TEC signed. On September 12th, Julie Stitzel participated in a fireside chat with Katie Ott, senior manager of federal government relations for Exelon and vice-chair of C_TEC’s UAS working group. Their conversation focused on UAS operations in the United States—highlighting the impact they are having on the energy sector. On September 13th, Jordan Crenshaw participated in a discussion with Travis Hall of NTIA about the Chamber’s privacy principles initiative during the National Retail Federation’s (https://t.e2ma.net/click/3vyvqd/r2f0ql/vd7vrr) Las Vegas privacy meeting. On September 17th, the Telecommunications & E-Commerce Policy Committee hosted a call on privacy issues as well as regulatory relief efforts for 5G and cable operators at the Federal Communications Commission. On September 20th, C_TEC hosted an AV Working Group call to discuss opportunities for autonomy in Nebraska, an update from House Energy & Commerce on AV legislation as well as the AV START Act. On September 20th, Jordan Crenshaw talked on a panel about infrastructure reform for Politico Live event, “The New Age of Innovation: The State of Play in 5G in the U.S (https://t.e2ma.net/click/3vyvqd/r2f0ql/b67vrr).” Other speakers included FCC Commissioners Brendan Carr and Jessica Rosenworcel. On September 25th, Julie Stitzel attended a legislative roundtable focused on cryptocurrencies hosted by the following Members of Congress: Warren Davidson (R-OH), Ted Budd (R-NC), Tom Emmer (R-MN), French Hill (R-AR), and Darren Soto (D-FL). On September 26th, Tim Day authored an op ed in Morning Consult (https://t.e2ma.net/click/3vyvqd/r2f0ql/ry8vrr) calling for federal privacy legislation. The Chamber also submitted along with a diverse group of trade associations a letter (https://t.e2ma.net/click/3vyvqd/r2f0ql/7q9vrr) to the Senate Commerce, Science & Transportation Committee a letter echoing this call for its hearing on data privacy. On September 26th, Jordan Crenshaw penned an Above the Fold piece (https://t.e2ma.net/click/3vyvqd/r2f0ql/njawrr) on the benefits of the FCC’s plan to alleviate local wireless impediments. On September 28th, Jordan Crenshaw attended the White House’s 5G Summit and focused on infrastructure deployment. On October 2nd, C_TEC will host an in person New Economy working group meeting featuring a presentation by J.D. Grom (Executive Director) and Britt Vann (Policy Advisory) of the New Democrat Coalition—a group of forward-thinking House Democrats who are committed to pro-economic growth, pro-innovation, and fiscally responsible policies. They will discuss their efforts in the new economy space and explore ways our working group may work with them in the future. On October 10th, C_TEC will host a UAS working group call that will feature a presentation from representatives of the Uniform Law Commission (ULC). On October 18th, C_TEC will host TecNation Memphis in partnership with the Memphis Chamber and the Memphis IT Council. The half-day event is entitled TecNation: Memphis | The Age of Disruption and will bring together 200+ attendees from the business and IT leadership in the Greater Memphis area and local members of the U.S. Chamber.
