Gov. Andrew Cuomo secured victory in the New York Democratic gubernatorial primary, fending off a challenge from the left from actor Cynthia Nixon.

The Associated Press called the race for Cuomo, with him getting 66 percent of the vote according to preliminary numbers, with 24 percent of precincts reporting.

Nixon received 34 percent of the vote. In 2014, challenger Zephyr Teachout received 33 percent of the vote in a Democratic primary against Cuomo.

Cuomo had consistently led in the polls, getting 60 percent or higher with Nixon getting less than 30 percent. In a Siena College Research Institute poll released Monday, Cuomo received 63 percent and Nixon only received 22 percent support.

Cuomo will now face Republican Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro in the general election.
