This year’s President’s Innovation Prize winners from the University of Pennsylvania have joined the host of researchers and entrepreneurs pushing the envelope in science, business, and technology at the Pennovation Center. The competition, which highlights Penn’s commitment to innovation, grants graduating seniors the resources needed to translate revolutionary ideas into commercial ventures with a positive and potentially global impact.
Brandon Kao (School of Engineering and Applied Science) and Rui Jing Jiang (Wharton Business School) were selected for their progress in developing a defense against glaucoma and tackling blindness with nanotechnology. The pair have since launched Avisi Technologies (Avisi), a pre-clinical medical devices startup that will go to work from a dedicated startup garage and lab bench within the Pennovation Center.

With their new accommodations and access to continued mentorship from the Penn Center for Innovation, Kao and Jiang will advance the development of VisiPlate, a nanoscale ocular implant designed to treat the second leading cause of blindness in the world: open-angle glaucoma.

Summer 2018
Congratulations to the first cohort of graduates from Penn’s Coding Bootcamp! On July 21st, 45 students received their certificates of completion from the 24-week program. Penn LPS Coding Boot Camp is offered through Penn’s College of Liberal and Professional Studies in collaboration with Trilogy Education Services. The program is designed to give adult learners in the Philadelphia area from all backgrounds and experience levels a pathway into the tech industry. Some members from the inaugural class have already transitioned into new careers. In addition to technical training, participants receive career planning assistance, networking opportunities and hands-on learning activities with employers. With evening and weekend classes that can be taken online or in-person at the Pennovation Center, the part-time program is designed to help working adults balance personal, professional and academic pursuits.

The 2nd Annual Pennovation Summer Concert, featuring the Sun Ra Arkestra, was a huge hit with longtime Philly music fans, as well as new Penn students. After a rousing opening from local percussion group, Music Over Matter (MOM), over 200 attendees listened and danced to the Arkestra's innovative and eclectic music. Thank you to everyone from Grays Ferry and the wider Philadelphia community who joined us for this wonderful evening!
