The economy added 134,000 jobs in September, the Labor Department reported Friday, down from 270,000 in August.

Average hourly private-sector earnings were up 2.8 percent over the previous year, down from 2.9 percent in August. The unemployment rate was 3.7 percent, down from 3.9 percent in August.

Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg had predicted the creation of 180,000 jobs in September, an increase in over-the-year hourly earnings of 2.9 percent and an unemployment rate at 3.8 percent.
