Christine Blasey Ford told Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley Tuesday night that she would like the FBI to investigate her claims of sexual assault against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, potentially upending Republican plans to have a hearing featuring Ford and Kavanaugh on Monday.

"A full investigation by law enforcement officials will ensure that the crucial facts and witnesses in this matter are assessed in a non-partisan manner, and that the Committee is fully informed before conducting any hearing or making any decisions," Ford's attorneys wrote in a letter first obtained by CNN to Grassley.

Ford's push for an independent investigation into her allegations that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her while they were both in high school mirrors some Senate Democrats who have asked for the FBI or an independent counsel to investigate the claims instead of having senators trying to suss out the truth through a hearing. Kavanaugh has repeatedly denied Ford's allegations.

Ford's attorneys also said that her life has been "upended" since she made the decision to come forward on Sunday night, saying she has been the subject of death threats, her family has been forced to relocate and her email has been hacked.

"Dr. Ford has received a stunning amount of support from her community and from fellow citizens across our country," the letter says. "At the same time her worst fears have materialized."
