Students shared heartfelt messages on a range of topics---learning to get past failure, finding joy in small moments every day, seeking to understand historical racial injustice. In the midst of the hectic and fast-paced environment of school life, our weekly Meetings for Worship ground us as a community and bring us closer together as we gather in silent reflection about our individual lives, our values, and the world around us. There will be other opportunities for parents to attend the Upper School Meeting for Worship. We hope you will come and take part in this important aspect of the student experience at Sidwell Friends. Looking ahead, October 14-17 is Spirit Week. On October 15, 10th and 11th graders will report to the Athletic Center at 8:00 a.m. to take the PSAT. Ninth graders will report to the meeting room for a Quaker program, and seniors are allowed to stay home until 1:00 p.m. when the whole community will gather for school spirit activities. Throughout the week, students will engage in friendly grade-level competitions and activities that include the three-legged race and a pie-eating contest. The week will culminate with a pep rally on Friday, with the various fall sports teams putting on skits and dance routines for the entire School community. These events are all in anticipation of Homecoming, which takes place on Saturday, October 18. Parents and friends are welcome to join us on campus for Homecoming events, which include a number of different games as well as a club fair. Please see the athletic schedule posted on the Athletics page: http://www.sidwell.edu/athletics/index.aspx. I hope you and your family enjoy this long weekend! Game at 4:15 p.m. Cross country on Saturday, October 25, at Agricultural History Farm Park in Derwood, Maryland, starting at 1:00 p.m. Bring a picnic and enjoy the scene. FRIENDS DECISION-MAKING WORKSHOP Arthur Larrabee, a nationally recognized consultant and teacher on Quaker decision making and clerking, is working with the School this year at the request of the board of trustees and Ellis Turner. Arthur will conduct a workshop for parents about Friends decision making on October 14 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. He conducted similar workshops with the board of trustees, with all faculty and staff, and with the Alumni Executive Board, and also provided an overview for Upper School students at Collection on October 1. Arthur is meeting with the Upper School student government, honor committee, and club leaders, and will be working with 9th graders the morning of October 15. Since the Parents Association seeks to operate in the manner of Friends, we encourage all parents to attend this workshop; clerks are particularly asked to come. Whether you operate in a Friends decision-making environment or one that works by consensus or voting, Arthur's wisdom about why Quakers use a sense of the meeting process and the importance of listening in order to derive a sense of the meeting will be helpful. In addition, the practice of saying "I believe passionately about this but I release it to the meeting" is something everyone should experience. A light supper will be served at 5:30 p.m. To make sure we have enough materials, please RSVP to Kathi Webb (webbk@sidwell.edu) if you plan to attend this workshop (but you are welcome even if it is a last-minute decision). QUALITY OF COMMUNITY LIFE COMMITTEE The Quality of Community Life Committee and your Grade Representatives warmly invite you to a parent peer group meeting the evening of Homecoming on Saturday, October 18, beginning at 8:30 p.m. (or as soon as you drop off your student at the dance) in the Arts Center. Refreshments will be served, then parents will break out into grade level groups of 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th. We'll have two trained facilitators present for each grade; please join us in a supportive atmosphere for a discussion on a range of topics that impact us and our students. COMMUNITY MEETING FOR WORSHIP Please join families, faculty, staff, alumni, and former faculty and staff at our first Community Meeting for Worship on Sunday, October 19, at 10:30 a.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. A child-friendly Meeting for Worship will be available for children ages 4 and up. Refreshments will be served at the rise of meeting. If you anticipate bringing your Lower School-age children, please contact Kathi Webb (webbk@sidwell.edu) so we know how many students to anticipate. Other QUAKER QUOTES "I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness or abilities that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again." ---William Penn Quaker Quotes are intended to deepen the understanding and appreciation of Quakerism within the Sidwell Friends School community. Questions about Quakerism and its practice may be directed to Cynthia Richie Terrell (ctcabin@gmail.com). US NewsOne Act Festival Animal Tales, the One Act Festival, is this weekend.
