Mladic war crimes tribunal
Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb military commander, appears for a second time before the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague, having been given 30 days to enter a plea over alleged atrocities, including the massacre of 8,000 Muslims at Srebrenica in 1995.

European roaming charges
The European Commission
presents in Brussels its proposals for updated European Union roaming rules to cut voice, text and data costs when current rules expire in June 2012.

Future on the cards
The Future of Cards and Payments conference takes place over two days in London. Executives from banks, issuers and the retail sector will discuss regulation issues, fraud, technological innovations and cost-cutting strategies.

Islamic bankers meet
The two-day Asia Islamic Banking Conference is held in Kuala Lumpur.

Health secretary speaks

Navy future considered
The role of the UK Royal Navy following the government’s strategic defence and security review is debated at a two-day conference staged by the Royal United Services Institute in London.

World engineers assemble

Winter Olympics winner

Romney visits London
US Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, regarded by many as the frontrunner for the party nomination, visits London to raise campaign money from expatriate Americans.

Asia Pacific Cities summit
The Asia Pacific Cities Summit begins in Brisbane with speakers including Sir Richard Branson, head of the Virgin Group, and Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor, focusing on sustainability and managing rapid growth in cities (until July 8).

Non-fiction prize awarded
The BBC Samuel Johnson Prize For Non-Fiction awards take place in London.

Cyprus reunification talks
Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations secretary-general, hosts renewed talks in Geneva between Dimitris Christofias, Cyprus president, and Dervis Eroglu, the Turkish-Cypriot leader, with the aim of reunifying the island.

JULY 8

Shuttle’s final countdown
The space shuttle Atlantis is scheduled to launch on the final shuttle mission to the international space station before the three-strong fleet is retired.

Sudan’s formal breach
South Sudan becomes the first new country in Africa since Eritrea in 1993 after a referendum in the returned a 99 per cent result in favour of seceding from the north. Salva Kiir becomes the first president.

JULY 10

Syria opens national talks
Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s president, holds talks with opposition groups to set the framework for a national dialogue after weeks of unrest.

Britain hosts grand prix
The British Grand Prix, part of the Formula One world championships, takes place at Silverstone.
