President Barack Obama is launching a multi-trip effort to highlight his economic successes before the midterm elections. The campaigning started with a report on millennials in the work force and will continue today with a speech in California at a technology incubator in Santa Monica, all meant to boost enthusiasm among young voters - a crucial block for Democrats if they have any hope of retaining control of the Senate. The New York Times has a preview of the effort: "The report offers a glimpse of how Mr. Obama is now pitching his economic message. It notes, for example, that with college enrollments growing, more students are relying on loans to pay for education beyond high school. A White House fact sheet distributed with the report outlines steps the president has taken to make education more affordable." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8a3d0f882f5165d88c8a3b023e5376c46476621d7e8524479ce1e4e5796cd634 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8a3d0f882f5165d88c8a3b023e5376c46476621d7e8524479ce1e4e5796cd634 BOEHNER: OBAMA IS 'CONSCIOUSLY UNCOUPLING RHETORIC FROM REALITY.' Nice Gwyneth Paltrow there, Mr. Speaker. The Ohio Republican's office plans to rebut the Obama's address by noting that California's unemployment rate has be "stuck at 7.4 percent - well above the national average - for the last three months," according to highlights of a blog shared early with Huddle. "As a matter of fact, in Los Angeles County...average wages dropped by 1.9 percent last year - one of the biggest drops among the nation's big counties. ... So if anything, California is a microcosm for what a letdown the president's policies have been, and why so many are still asking, 'where are the jobs'," the speaker's office wrote. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8a3d0f882f5165d8e74a8c5304f807aa3e5a53e430ec0f938f666ac1d535c04e http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8a3d0f882f5165d8e74a8c5304f807aa3e5a53e430ec0f938f666ac1d535c04e HOUSE DEMS: A GIFT TO US IS A GIFT TO HILLARY. Edward-Isaac Dovere and Maggie Haberman write, "With even the most optimistic Democrats admitting that Republicans are going to keep the House, the reason to stay engaged now, officials and operatives are telling donors and activists, is to make it easier for Hillary Clinton to come in with a majority should she win the White House. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Democratic-aligned House Majority PAC haven't been alone in quietly making this argument to major donors. The National Republican Congressional Committee has been making a parallel case, urging their own donors not to take the GOP hold on the majority for granted and stop donating because they'll need to win as many seats as they can this year to build a firewall against Clinton in 2016." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8a3d0f882f5165d8de3476a913c5a44414093743da840722a0c509f5f87548ca http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8a3d0f882f5165d8de3476a913c5a44414093743da840722a0c509f5f87548ca TOP TALKER: "Aides knew of possible White House link to Cartagena, Colombia, prostitution scandal," by The Washington Post's Carol D. Leonnig and David Nakamura. "New details drawn from government documents and interviews show that senior White House aides were given information at the time suggesting that a prostitute was an overnight guest in the hotel room of a presidential advance-team member - yet that information was never thoroughly investigated or publicly acknowledged. The information that the Secret Service shared with the White House included hotel records and firsthand accounts - the same types of evidence the agency and military relied on to determine who in their ranks was involved." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8a3d0f882f5165d8e98e74ec3052e5c358af1bd5aaaacbc1f6477f057480ddc8 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8a3d0f882f5165d8e98e74ec3052e5c358af1bd5aaaacbc1f6477f057480ddc8 HUDDLE ASIDE:You can put money on it. This newest report - and the whiff of a cover-up - is sure to give the scandal new legs in the House. Disdain for the Secret Service has been, so far, a bipartisan affair, but your Huddle author imagines that news that the White House may have let the son of a major donor go unpunished will turn the heads of many OGR Republicans. HAPPY THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9 and welcome to The Huddle, your play-by-play preview of all the action on Capitol Hill. Your Huddle author is craving ice cream after seeing our veep indulge in the tasty treat. Also, Jon Allen, if you're reading. I get it now. Rudy Cramer writes for Buzzfeed, "A 'white powdery substance' was found in the mail at Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's district office in New York City on Wednesday, her spokesman [Glen Caplin said.]...The chemical makeup of the 'white powdery substance,' as Caplin described it, has not yet been identified. Gillibrand was not inside the district office when the substance was found." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8a3d0f882f5165d8bb4ddfe0fdebf81e56a587963d5a4a8880b07570bb57627e http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8a3d0f882f5165d8bb4ddfe0fdebf81e56a587963d5a4a8880b07570bb57627e TRENCH WARFARE FOR THE HOUSE. Via Alex Isenstadt, "The battle for the House has turned into trench warfare, with Republicans trying to scrape out enough wins to give them a historic majority and Democrats doing everything they can to minimize GOP gains. If the election were held today, strategists from both sides say, Republicans would expand their current majority by between six and eight seats - a respectable showing that would put them just short of an 11-seat goal. If they can hit that benchmark, Republicans will have their largest House majority since Harry Truman's presidency. Standing in their way is a cash deficit, a small playing field and a poor party brand. While the 2014 environment is favorable for the GOP, it doesn't resemble the wave-like atmosphere that propelled Republicans in 1994 and 2010 or Democrats in 2006 and 2008." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8a3d0f882f5165d82aba4d6774ce7089a238b2f1e64de4876103c95c48fac83b http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8a3d0f882f5165d82aba4d6774ce7089a238b2f1e64de4876103c95c48fac83b DEMOCRATS HAVE AN ENTHUSIASM PROBLEM. "But just how bad is it for the blue team with a little less than four weeks left in the 2014 election? A new poll from Gallup has some pretty good clues...Democrats are less enthusiastic at this point than they have been in at least the last four midterm elections. And that includes the big GOP wave year of 2010." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=d5a820f82d64011611a80ee4adb868528b52315c1bc650d6eb7704dd0c4002d0 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=d5a820f82d64011611a80ee4adb868528b52315c1bc650d6eb7704dd0c4002d0 CONGRESSIONAL DOC MAKES EBOLA VIDEO.The Office of the Attending Physician for Congress has released a video discussing the Ebola threat and ways congressional staffers and lawmakers can ward off the viral diseases. While the office noted in an email to staffers that "there is no indication of an immediate concern" the congressional doc still urged offices to develop an up-to-date continuity of operations plan....just in case. "Parts of North Carolina Law Limiting Vote Are Restored by Justices" by Adam Liptak and Alan Blinder for the New York Times. "The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a brief, unsigned order reinstating provisions of a North Carolina voting law that bar same-day registration and counting votes cast in the wrong precinct. A federal appeals court had blocked the provisions, saying they disproportionately harmed black voters." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=d5a820f82d640116974f067093cd651617beffc9f62838cdb4b47cdb1eeb4bdf http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=d5a820f82d640116974f067093cd651617beffc9f62838cdb4b47cdb1eeb4bdf WEDNESDAY'S TRIVIA WINNER - Luke Legate was the first to correctly name ham hock as the essential ingredient that was re-added to the Senate's famous bean soup after it was removed from the recipe for some strange reason.
