Please Join Us in Indianapolis on Monday to Show Support for Senator Tallian’s Bill Upholding Public Rights on the Lake Michigan Shoreline and to Oppose Two Other Bills That Would Allow Privatization of the Shoreline

SENATE BILLS

IMPORTANT HEARING IN THE INDIANA SENATE On Monday, February 11, at 9:00AM CST/10:00 am ET, the Indiana Senate Natural Resources committee will hear two bills that would impact the February 2018 Indiana Supreme Court ruling that firmly put the state's Lake Michigan shorelands into public, not private, ownership.

SUPPORT: SB 553 ( [http://iga.in.gov/legislative/2019/bills/senate/553]), introduced by Senator Karen Tallian, enforces the right for the public to use the Lake Michigan shore for recreational activities. It also reinforces the Indiana Supreme Court's definition of the "Lake Michigan shore" as the land along the edge of Lake Michigan between the water's edge and the ordinary high water mark. LBCA will be testifying in support of SB 553. We urge you to JOIN US to let the Committee know there is grassroots support for this Bill.

OPPOSE: SB581 ( [http://iga.in.gov/legislative/2019/bills/senate/581]), introduced by Senator Blake Doriot, defines the Lake Michigan shore in a way that could be construed by a court as grounds to give away the shore to private ownership. LBCA will be testifying against SB 581. Again, we urge you to JOIN US and vocalize your opposition.

HOUSE BILL

ANOTHER IMPORTANT HEARING ON MONDAY IN THE INDIANA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

On Monday, February 11, at 9:30AM CT/10:30AM ET, the Indiana House Natural Resources Committee also will hear one bill that could negatively impact the Indiana Supreme Court ruling in favor of the public trust.

OPPOSE: HB 1533 ( [http://iga.in.gov/legislative/2019/bills/house/1553]), authored by Representative Steve Bartels and co-authored by Representative Jim Pressel, seems of good intention but actually contradicts the Indiana Supreme Court ruling, suggesting that the Indiana shoreline be defined other than by the natural ordinary high water mark. LBCA does not support HB 1553 and feels strongly that it could undo the public's right to the shoreline. We urge you to JOIN US in Indianapolis to OPPOSE THIS BILL.
