** 190 Trillion Cubic Feet
------------------------------------------------------------

The South China Sea holds an estimated 190 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 11 billion barrels of oil with much more potentially undiscovered. Competition for this reservoir of oil and natural gas has triggered standoffs between claimants in the South China Sea, especially between China, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

** 14,000 U.S. Military Personnel
------------------------------------------------------------

In December of 2018, President Trump ordered the Pentagon to cut the current number of soldiers in Afghanistan—14,000 military personnel—by half. The Trump administration has not announced a withdrawal timeline, but peace talks have opened between the Taliban and key Afghan powerbrokers.

** 3 Weeks Before the Election

On February 16, Nigerians will vote in the most consequential presidential election since its return to civilian rule in 1999. 3 weeks before the vote, incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari suspended the country’s chief justice. His opponent, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, reacted by suspending his campaign for 72 hours.

** 5% of Global GDP
------------------------------------------------------------

The United Nations estimates that corruption cost the world economy at least $2.6 trillion—5% of the global GDP—in 2018. Out of 180 countries, China’s perceived corruption slid from 77th in 2017 to 87th in 2018. The United States also dipped from 16th place in 2017 to 22nd place in 2018.

** 70% Less Federal Contractors
------------------------------------------------------------

The number of new vendors entering the federal contracting market in 2016 was 70% lower than in 2005, where it was at its highest since 2001. Similarly, the number of new vendors entering the defense industry in 2016 was 75% lower than its highest point since 2001.
