Biographical Information

James B. Smith was confirmed as Ambassador of the United States to Saudi Arabia in August 2009. Prior to his nomination, he held several positions of increasing authority at Raytheon Corporation, including International Business Development Executive at Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems from 2007 to 2009; Vice President of Government Business at Raytheon Aircraft Company from 2005 to 2007; and Vice President of the Precision Engagement Strategic Business Area from 2003 to 2005. Prior to joining Raytheon, Ambassador Smith was Director of Naval C2 Systems at Lockheed Martin Mission Systems.

Prior to his experience in the private sector, Ambassador Smith served in the United States Air Force, from which he retired as Brigadier-General on October 1, 2002. Some highlights of his career include Deputy Commander at the Joint Warfighting Center, U.S. Joint Forces Command in Suffolk, Virginia from 2000 to 2002; Commander in the 18th Wing at Kadena Air Base, Japan from 1998 to 2000; and Deputy for Operations at the North American Aerospace Defense Command, Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado from 1996 to 1998.

Ambassador Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in Military History from the United States Air Force Academy and a Master of Arts in History from Indiana University. He is the author of several academic articles. He is fluent in French and has a working knowledge of Dutch.
