Assembly: Joseph Stands with Many, Cherokee Storyteller: The Trail of Tears This week’s Northwest Current correspondent: Harold Fuson School pictures: Proof sheets for school photos were distributed to students last week. Instead of a complimentary package of photos, students received a single proof sheet with a number of different pictures. Parents must visit the photographer’s website to order their complimentary package by next Tuesday, October 14th. If your child has not shown you the proof sheet, you can log on to www.freedspirit.com and click the “View Your Photos” button. You will, however, need a password; Julia Porter can give that to you if you email her at PorterJ@sidwell.edu. Retakes for students who missed picture day or who did not like their pictures is today (10/7). All 7/8 students will be involved in service activities this Thursday. You should have received a permission slip and information about the day; please contact your child’s advisor with any questions. Reminder: all students need to bring a water bottle for field trips of any kind. To minimize waste, we have stopped providing the 4 oz. water bottles that used to come with bag lunches from the dining room. Lactaid milk is available to students in the dining room at lunch – they should feel free to ask the dining room staff for it. We have some used textbooks that we are interested in donating to the World Bank Book Project. There are about 14 boxes. If you can help with transportation, please let me know. A reminder not to come early to pick up in the afternoon. Hearst School’s dismissal is at 3:15, so we don’t help if we are waiting too early. Once their buses have left the area, things move much more smoothly. Thank you! We have many club opportunities for students this year! To recap: • Monday: Art Club and Spanish Heritage Club (both 5-8) • Tuesday: 7/8 Handbell Choir (AM), 5/6 Math Club, Ping Pong (open to all) • Wednesday: 7/8 Boys Ensemble (AM), 7/8 Debate, 7/8 Girls’ Ensemble, Robotics (SPARC) • Thursday: Math Counts (grades 6-8), Creative Writing (open to all) These are published for student information in the daily bulletin. If you have questions, please contact us and we can put you in touch with the appropriate teacher. Directories are going home with the youngest child in the family this week. Also remember that the directory is available on line. Please be sure to read the privacy statement on the first page of the directory. SFS phone numbers and email addresses are to be used only for school business. Parent Conference Days are Tuesday and Wednesday, October 28 and 29. If you did not sign up for a conference on Back-to-School Night, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher or advisor for a time. We will have a dedicated project to work on through the school year. The tentative plan is to meet on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month at 1:00 p.m., but that time can be adjusted based on others' schedules. If interested please contact Dana Milbank, dana.milbank@washpost.com. SFS Community and A Wider Circle Make a Family's Holiday Wish Come True! For the 2014 holiday season, the Middle School Community Service Committee will be supporting A Wider Circle's gift giving program. This allows our families to adopt a family that is unable to purchase gifts for the holidays. Read on for how this experience impacted one Sidwell family! This was one of the highlights of our family's holiday season last year! After receiving a detailed wish list, the four of us had so much fun putting gifts together for each member of our Wider Circle family. Our experience was made even more rich by getting to know the parent, a single mother in this case, and delivering the gifts to her apartment when her kids were away. It was a powerful opportunity to put ourselves in the place of those less fortunate and help make their holiday wishes come true. Please consider signing up or, if it feels like too big of a commitment, you may wish to partner with another Sidwell family! If you're interested or have any questions, please contact Marjan at marjanehsassi@hotmail.com or 202-664-4706. MILLER FARMS COMMUNITY SERVICE EVENT Join the Upper School Community Service Committee for a morning of gleaning on Saturday, October 11, at Miller Farms, 10140 Piscataway Rd, Clinton, MD 20735. This is a great way to get out, enjoy some fresh air, good food (there is a bakery with fresh donuts, baked goods and ice cream, as well as a farm market and barbecue stand) and fellowship. We will be gathering at the parking lot of Miller Farms at 8:30 a.m. and heading to a nearby field to pick crops for a few hours before heading back to the farm store and then back to town. We are often joining other groups of people from the DC area so this is a great way to connect with others and share stories as we pick the foods that will make their way to those in need in our community. Please RSVP to Matt Fraidin, mifraidin@yahoo.com. Other CREW TEAM CAR WASH Attention dirty, dusty and dreary cars... Be sure to stop by the Wisconsin Avenue parking garage on Sunday, October 19, from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., for the Crew Team Car Wash! PLAYWRIGHT COMPETITION ATTENTION 6th-8th grade students: Are you a budding playwright? Do you have the desire to see your work evolve from page to stage? Consider submitting an original 10-minute one-act play to the YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS FOR CHANGE: WHAT IS FAMILY? Competition. This competition is sponsored by American Alliance for Theatre & Education (AATE) and Theatre for Youth (TYA). The deadline is February 1, 2015. See Tim Reagan, grade 6-8 drama teacher for details.Click on submission rules for further details. QUAKER QUOTE "During this initial period of Quakerism, Friends were not only engaged in sharing their 'good news' with others in England...Of particular importance were the missions to the British colonies in North America and the West Indies. And under the leadership of William Penn (1644-1718), Quaker colonies were established in West Jersey and Pennsylvania. Quakers began to settle in the Delaware Valley in 1675. In 1681, Charles II repaid a sizable debt to the estate of William Penn's father by granting to Penn the land to the west of the Delaware River. The King named this land Pennsylvania in honor of Admiral Penn. William Penn intended to establish there a veritable 'holy experiment' - an enlightened proprietorship based on New Testament principles and with liberty of conscience guaranteed. Unfortunately, Penn's tenure as proprietor of his colony was frequently marked by conflict...Perhaps the most lasting vestige of Penn's 'holy experiment' is a form of creative tension. Penn's political practice was by no means consistent with his theory, nor was his theory of governance adequately developed. Then as now, the tension between practice and theory, social engagement and mystical illumination, yielded as much heat as light. And yet, the underlying principles of Penn's vision are as pertinent as ever: participatory decision making, religious liberty, justice as fair dealing with one's neighbors, non-violent resistance rather than military defense, and the abolition of oaths." ~ Faith and Practice of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, 1997 edition Quaker quotes are intended to deepen the understanding of Quakerism within the Sidwell Friends School community.
