TeamHydro Takes to the Bay!
On June 25th, Team Hydro participated in the 19th annual Sharkfest Swim from
Alcatraz to San Francisco. This is the third year that they have participated
in this fun and exciting event.
Their efforts raise money for the Kate Finlayson Memorial Research Grant.

Welcome to the June edition of Pathways!


We would like to take the time to apologize for the lateness of this edition
of Pathways. We experienced some technical challenges this month, which led
to many delays in publication. We thank you for your patience and are happy
to finally get this edition into your hands.


In this edition we are highlighting some exciting news. We are very happy
to announce that we are taking applications for the next (3rd) round of research
grants. This round will target more experienced researchers and concentrate
on expanding our knowledge of the Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF) dynamics.


In other news, hydrocephalus awareness is taking leaps forward and has been
featured on ABC's Grey's Anatomy for the third time and TeamHYDRO is once
again heading to San Francisco Bay to raise money and awareness. Guest bloggers
David Carl and Debbi Buffa share insight on communication and travel for people
with hydrocephalus; on a sad note, the entire hydrocephalus community mourns
the loss of Salomon Hakim, a true giant in the realm of hydrocephalus treatment
and research.

HA Announces Criteria for New Round of mid-career Research GrantsThe Hydrocephalus
Association is pleased to announce the request for applications (RFA) for the
next round of direct funding for hydrocephalus research. This new round of
research grants will focus on projects focused on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
production, flow and regulation.

HA Mourns the Passing of Dr. Salomon Hakim

The Hydrocephalus Association joins the medical community in mourning the loss
of Dr. Salomon Hakim. Dr. Hakim defined Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus and
dedicated his life to the treatment of hydrocephalus.

Hydrocephalus Support, Education and Fun at the Children's Hospital and Research
Center in Oakland, CA


The Hydrocephalus Association was represented by Karima Roumila and Jordan
Faigen at the Oakland Children's Hospital annual Hydrocephalus Festival. Many
patients and their families from all over Northern California gathered together
to share in their common struggle with hydrocephalus.

is a unique resource for our community and it's growing every day as more

arise about different aspects of hydrocephalus, the support and education team

HA's Acting CEO Rick Smith gives helpful hints on how you, a member of our
hydrocephalus community, can reach out to the media and educate them while
helping to bring hydrocephalus forward into the national spotlight.

Congresswoman Giffords Shunted


As a result of the near fatal shooting that took place on January 8th, Congresswoman
Giffords has received a permanent shunt to help cope with her injuries. We
all wish her well.

Hydrocephalus has made its third appearance on ABC's Grey's Anatomy. The HA
has issued a call to action to its membership to use this occasion to raise
awareness of hydrocephalus.

Once again, the HA is participating in the Combined Federal Campaign which
allows federal employees to donate to the cause of their choice through their
payroll.
