<P>Dear friends and supporters,</P>
<P>Before this 2012 primary election week comes to a close, I wanted to write a personal note of thanks to everyone who provided support, large and small, along this long and often uncertain road of politics and public service.</P>
<P>It was a road that included reduced and redrawn Congressional seats, vetoed as unfair by Governor Nixon but became law over his veto; court challenges that won better standards against political gerrymandering, but ultimately were approved by Republican dominated courts; and a spirited but healthy primary that I likened to two players on the same team competing for one starting position. My colleague, Lacy Clay, won that competition and I once again congratulate him and support him. Even in the heat of the campaign, I extended my hand to him and pledged to support the winner of our contest and work united to re-elect President Obama, Senator McCaskill and our Missouri Democratic ticket.</P>
<P>I personally reiterated that pledged immediately after the election to not only Rep. Clay, but also to Senator McCaskill , DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wassermann-Schultz, Missouri Democratic Party Chair Mike Sanders and our Democratic Leader, Nancy Pelosi.</P>
<P>To all my supporters, I ask that you join me in that support and urge you to vote, volunteer and contribute to win in November.</P>
<P>After the results were in on Election Night, I stood with Debra and my family before a room full of great friends and stalwart supporters to thank them and to thank the citizens who gave me the great honor and high privilege to serve as their Representative in the United States Congress for eight years, and the Missouri House of Representatives for four years before that. I shared my belief that this campaign was about what I learned watching my father and how important it is to show up , stand up and fight; </P>
<P>For the people you serve;</P>
<P>For what you believe in;</P>
<P>For what is right</P>
<P>Even when it is tough.</P>
<P>I also said that the new 1st Congressional District belongs to the people and they deserved a debate, a choice and a campaign about records and priorities that required candidates to work hard to earn their support. The people of the new District made their decision. I respect that. Now is the time to unify.</P>
<P>Many friends have asked about our plans. </P>
<P>First, we are helping our youngest son Andrew pack up and move to Columbia next week, to start his Freshman year at Mizzou, and we will celebrate Austin’s 23rd birthday on August 18th. Then, Debra and I have a lot of catching up to do, before the session reconvenes in September, with a great deal left on the Congress’ agenda before the end of the year. We will be attending the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte and we are committed to be “all in” to support our National and Missouri Democratic tickets for November.</P>
<P>My family and I greatly value your friendship, your encouragement and your support, that has enabled my elected public service for the past 12 years. I will keep you informed throughout this year and as for next year, stay tuned.</P>
